Your skin can be your biggest beauty feature or your biggest pet peeve. In a world where women are made to think that makeup is an absolute must – and where wearing makeup can be fun and pretty – more often or not, your skin takes a beating. Forgetting to go through a skin care routine once or twice might be okay, but not to do it at all is the worst thing. Not only can it clog up your pores creating those pimples everyone hates, but it can also age you prematurely and create blemishes and discoloration.

Type of Skin

The first thing you need to do is recognize what sort of skin you have;

  • Oily skin is greasy, shiny and can have large pores.
  • Dry skin can be flakey, scaly and rough.
  • Combination skin can have both of the above, usually oily centers around the nose and forehead, and the dry skin stays on the cheeks and chin.
  • Sensitive skin can react to different products and can be a result of asthma or Rhodesia.

You should always buy products that are right for your skin type. If you’re unsure which, then ask a beautician or a trained someone at your drugstore of choice.

Skin Care Routine

A daily skin care routine doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming.

  • AM: wash your face with lukewarm water and pat dry with a clean towel – change your towel daily to avoid dabbing bacteria on your clean face. Washing first will rinse off the sleep and sweat from the night. Then apply a cleanser that is right for your skin type. Once this has been absorbed or washed off, continue with a toner, this helps to reduce any blemishes or discoloration. Next, apply a face moisturizer – these are different from what you would put on your body as it is lighter and conditioned to not clog up your pores.
  • PM: Wipe off your makeup with a makeup cloth or good old water – no soap and try not to scrub at your skin. Then repeat your morning routine, after your moisturizer has absorbed apply any particular skin treatment you might need. This might be some Marine collagen treatment or localized acne treatment.

Never go to bed with makeup on.

Makeup

When choosing your makeup make sure you avoid oil-based products, you want something water based and light for your skin. Again check if there are any that suit your skin type.

Apply an SPF primer before putting on your makeup, this helps to even out any blemishes and protects your pores from the worst of your makeup.

If you need to cover up, then use a green concealer for redness, purple for yellow undertones and peach or yellow for dark circles or bruising.

Avoid layering your makeup throughout the day, and try to not redo your makeup multiple times. The act of scrubbing clean your face and immediately applying chemicals will just irritate your skin.

Despite your dreams of a fairytale come true, the wedding day can be very stressful. Yes, you will finally be marrying the man you love, but with the amount of planning that goes into making the big event happen, you may be in danger of having a stress-induced meltdown. There is the potential  for mistakes, so you want to do all you can to make life easier for yourself.

I’ve been involved in a few myself and seen room for improvement, mentally taking notes for my own big day.

1.  Planning is important

There is lots to do before the big day, from looking at the best venues to picking out your bridesmaid dresses. Make a checklist of everything you need to do, and accomplish your tasks ahead of time. This will give you peace of mind in the run-up to the wedding and will cut down a lot of the stress on your wedding day. I’m using The Knot checklist… kind of out of order but it’s at least letting me know about where I should stand with tasks before the big day.

2. Get plenty of sleep the night before

You have a long day ahead of you, so it is advisable to get plenty of sleep the night before. You don’t want to spend the night celebrating with alcohol, and then wake up the next morning with the mother (in law) of all hangovers. I made this mistake at a friend’s wedding… never again. Get your beauty sleep, and you will wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on whatever the day throws at you.

3. Hire the beauty squad

Weddings can be expensive, so you will want to save money where you can. However, you don’t want to look like Bonzo the Clown when you walk down the aisle because of your best friends ill-conceived efforts with a makeup brush, so hire a professional to work on your hair and makeup. You want to look good on your wedding photos, so the cost will be worth it.

I found my MUA through a friend of my mom’s and my hair stylist through a family friend stylist who wasn’t available. Use Instagram and talk to your friends! My venue suggested crazy expensive stylists that I wasn’t super impressed with, so it took a little research but I’m very happy with my choices.

On the same note- don’t feel like everyone going to the wedding needs to get ready with you. This was a mistake that set one wedding I went to back over an hour.

4. Find moral support

Your family and friends are great for moral support, so for all your emotional needs, they should be your first port of call. You need those people around you who are going to uplift you, encourage you, and make you smile. Ditch anybody who will only make you feel bad, and give them a job to do to keep them out of your hair. My MUA also said she only wants my mom with me while I’m getting my makeup done. I’m fine with that.

5. Call in the professionals

Your family may be able to take on some of the wedding tasks, such as directing guests in the car park and looking after the kids after the service. However, there are some aspects of the day where the professionals should be called on. So, to avoid the mishap of Uncle Pete leaving the lens cap on, and your mother-in-law giving your guests food poisoning with her unfortunate fish stew, hire experienced people to carry out those jobs which require the professional touch.

Because my venue is pretty all-inclusive, the food is totally taken care of (once we have our tasting). Our photog was another recommendation from a friend, and I hired a month-of coordinator to make sure everything falls into place.

6. Arrive early, but not too early

You want to get to the wedding on time, but the earlier you get there, the more stressed out you may be. Give yourself time to relax, spend time pampering yourself in the morning, and then arrive at the church at a reasonable time to take some pictures there before guests start arriving.

7. Go with the flow

This is your day, so enjoy it. If something does go wrong, don’t stress, and go with the flow. Chances are, nobody will see the issue you but you- if you’re not too busy to notice. You’re getting married to someone you love, and that is all that matters. So, if the best man knocks over the chocolate fountain, or your mother-in-law locks herself in the loo, keep smiling, and carry on regardless.

I used to have really bad skin. In middle school, my forehead was constantly broken out. Unfortunately, I didn’t really understand how skincare worked so I was essentially burning my skin off with Stridex, causing it to produce more oil and break out more. Luckily, towards the end of high school, a friend of mine introduced me to a facial moisturizer that was actually made for skin prone to breakouts, and I got hooked.

Unfortunately, around this time, I also got hooked on full face of makeup every damn day. I was putting layers on layers of foundation on to cover the cystic acne that came from unhealthy lifestyle choices in college- not drinking enough water, drinking too much everything else, eating crap, not sleeping enough… you get the picture. My skin got very little time to breathe and I wasn’t worried a bit about providing it with any sun protection either.

While I still break out along my chin during certain times of the month, if I’m stressed/ sick, or if I don’t wash my face well enough when I do use foundation (maybe a couple times a month), my skin is so much happier with me now that I treat it with care, not aggression. This summer I’ve tried two products that I want to compare for my real-girl women on the go.

While we’re on the subject of makeup… my amazing sister in law is donating the entirety of her profit on her sales from her Limelight shop to victims of Hurricane Harvey through tomorrow night! If you were looking to try a new brand or color, now is it! Just join her VIP Facebook group  and click on any of the shopping links. I got myself a cupcake gloss!)

e.l.f. Cosmetics BB Cream SPF 20||Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer

While the e.l.f. Cosmetics BB Cream SPF 20 had heavier coverage, it might have actually been too heavy. This may be a weird thing to criticize, but it was difficult to wash off my hands after applying it and left my fingers feeling dry. That being said, it did cover up my blemishes quite nicely- almost with the thickness of a foundation. It also left the same feeling on my skin as a foundation when I removed it, which I wasn’t crazy about. I do appreciate the SPF 20 as should we all, and for $6, it really packs a punch. Honestly, for that price, I’d probably buy it again to use as foundation in a pinch while traveling or if I run out of the real stuff, but I might not go back to it for my every day.

The Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer is much lighter coverage. Enhancer is definitely the right word because it certainly doesn’t cover much. The trade-off is that my skin is happier with this product and there really isn’t a whole lot I need to cover. Honestly, if I do my whole routine with bronzer, highlighter, blush and all- this works plenty well as a base. By the end of the day, my skin still feels moisturized. It is double the price of the e.l.f. Cosmetics BB Cream SPF 20- but that only brings it to $12.99, still making it budget friendly. There’s an SPF 20 in this one too and I have to claim it as my favorite for everyday face. Usually, it’s just this stuff, mascara on my top lashes, and out the door.

Let me know if you’ve tried either of these and what you think. Do you have a favorite everyday beauty product?

Everyone seems to be looking for the same answers in the summer, and especially when it comes to looking sharp and stylish even though it feels like your makeup is going to melt off your face. When the days are long and bright, the sun is raging, but you still need to make it to the office in style, it’s time for a bit of brainstorming.

Here is a handful of the most genius advice I’ve come across on how to beat the heat and look good on the go – no matter how warm and tired you feel on the inside.

stay salty beach tee shirt

Embrace a bare face

Your biggest enemy during long and warm days is heavy makeup. If you want to feel as fresh at the end of the day as you did in the morning, you should try to get used to wearing less of it in the summer – or nothing at all. Your skin will be able to breathe a bit easier, you can wipe signs of sweat off without smudging everything up, and might even be able to catch a bit of color on your way to work.

If you’re not used to starting your day like this, start by using your foundation as a concealer instead. Dab a bit under your eyes, at the wings of your nose, and wherever you feel it needs a bit of cover-up.

That way, you’re not sweating off the entire masterpiece before the day has even started, and you still get to look at bright and even skin when you face a mirror.

Keep in mind that your regular foundation probably has a bit of sunscreen in it that you need to substitute, so have a look at these non-greasy sun lotions for your face. Opt for a powder-based foundation, by the way, to absorb any excess oil if you’d like to use the same amount of makeup as you’re used to.

No more chapped lips

If you thought dried out and brittle lips are for the cold seasons, think again. People don’t seem to remember how much the air conditioning in an office is able to dry out everything – and your lips in particular. First of all, spend a bit of time on applying lip liner before lipstick when it’s hot outside; the warm weather is going to smear it all over the place, but a neutral lip liner will keep it where it should be.

Next, remember to apply something moisturizing on your lips first – or you risk drying them out completely. It’s a good idea to bring some of your favorite products with you to freshen up during the day, which I’m sure you’re already doing. Before you grab the usual bag, check out this selection to boost those summer vibes a bit.

Try to achieve that fresh feeling of freedom you have at the beach after a long day in the sun; with a golden face, relaxed happiness, and a casual style to stay cool. It is, of course, tricky to pull off that bikini in the office – and even illegal, come to think of it, but try to apply the same mindset to those extra hot days.

Go easy on yourself and remember that less is more, particularly when the weather can make you more beautiful naturally.

Thinking of beauty and makeup routines can fill many with dread. Women are either trying to battle the fight against aging or how to figure out simple makeup tips and the right foundation shade. A basic beauty routine should not come with a big manual and list of instructions.Take simple small steps to little routines and you’ve already won half the battle.

Ultimate Beauty Bundle

There is plenty of skin care products out there, in fact, the skin industry is booming with more women wanting to take care of their skin. The most important step is to keep it simple, three steps that are needed is a face wash, toner and serum/moisturizer. Try not to overload your beauty cabinet with lots of tried and tested products. Identify the specifics of your skin type once this has been achieved successfully you’ll save yourself shopping around and save money in the process.Sticking to a routine before bed, you’ll reap the benefits and this sets up a smooth and gorgeous skin base when applying foundation.

Once you’ve conquered the skincare aspect all you need is the perfect foundation shade. If you’ve managed to already successfully find your shade then be thankful, most women still do not know how to get the right shade. Plenty of beauty counters, and stores like Sephora, can help match up your skin with their in store testers which can match instantly. Whatever you do, do not test on the back of your hand this is an old myth that the skin matches your skin. If you want to match skin yourself place the tester on the chin line. This method will be the closest way to match without professional help.

You may have self-confidence issues which can hinder your ability to conquering a successful beauty routine. Sometimes the only way to restoring radiance wellness and beauty is to be pampered by the professionals. A wide range of treatments are available to make you feel relaxed with minimal effort. Chemical peels, are great to gaining confidence back if you’ve suffered at all with bad acne scars. Not only offering treatment but guidance and support to keeping your skin looking the best it can. Treat yourself by visiting and take a step in the right direction.

It’s not just about looking beautiful but feeling good too. Leading a happy and healthy lifestyle is the key to sustaining a beauty routine. Confidence is one of the best things to have that isn’t in your makeup bag. You can have all the expensive makeup you like, but if you lack the confidence to believe how naturally beautiful you are you won’t look or feel radiant.

This may be obvious but by drinking and eating the correct things your skin will thank you for it. Drinking water is the best beauty tip to providing healthy skin, keeping you hydrated and clearing out toxins. All the moisturizers and skin care products merely enhance the skin to achieving a healthy glow and preventing ageing. These steps along with a healthy and positive attitude to loving yourself really does help to being the best you possible.
