Hygge (pronounced hue-gah) is a Danish word that is a feeling or mood that comes taking genuine pleasure in making ordinary, every day moments more meaningful, beautiful or special. Whether it’s making coffee a verb by creating a ritual of making it then lingering over a cup to a cosy evening in with friends to the simple act of lighting a candle with every meal. Hygge is being aware of a good moment whether it’s simple or special.
Some refer to hygge as an “art of creating intimacy” (either with yourself, friends and your home). While there’s no one English word to describe hygge, several can be used interchangeably to describe the idea of hygge such as cosiness, charm, happiness, contentness, security, familiarity, comfort, reassurance, kinship, and simpleness. – Hygge House

In my humble opinion, this the winter of 2017 is the perfect time for Americans to be latching onto the concept of hygge. We are not only in a physically cold and kind of dreary time, but there is a lot of uncertainty and chaos happening around us. We’re also (myself included) too entirely addicted to technology and the go go go culture that comes from always being on. This past Sunday, after a whirlwind trip to New York City to experience a sliver of NYFW, I woke up, made coffee in my favorite mug, and just sat for a moment on my cozy couch, wrapped up in my blanket. This simple moment, this pause, meant so much.

Kendall and I adore our apartment, and it’s kind of a haven from the outside world sometimes. Physically, it’s warm and cozy. Beyond that, it’s also where we can catch our breath after long days. Without knowing it, we’ve been practicing hygge since we moved in. We always light a candle (usually in every room), we delight in our weekend routine of big homemade breakfast, and everything we’ve purchased for our little nest is soft to the touch. (Sarah touched a on why we need to be so tactile in this post, and I wholeheartedly agree.)

What do you do to practice hygge? Do you have a favorite cozy ritual? Maybe you like to keep fresh flowers in the house? I’d love to hear about how you pause + enjoy the simple things!

Did it not seem like it took for.ev.er. for February to get her? Yeesh. But it’s here! It’s time for hearts and flowers and pink hopefully hints of spring because this winter has been nowhere near wintery enough so I’m over it. I also see February as pre-March aka pre-My-Birthday-Month. Last year I was so freaked out about being in a wedding every month that I didn’t even want to celebrate. I did end up celebrating, because I have awesome friends and family, but this year I vow to get back to my birthday queen self.

But I digress- it’s not my turn yet. It’s February’s turn! This month’s wish list is full of all things pink, soft, and sweet. Here’s to all of the hearts and hoping we get some more snow.

Kendall and I really put the “living” in living room. We have a beautiful dining set that just accumulates coats during the week as we prefer to have our meals at our coffee table. We picked out our couch together- soft velvety grey + perfect for napping. Now that it’s gotten frigid in DC, we’ve been spending more time there than usual, and I love how our little space came together.

The coffee table really is the center of our home, and we keep adding little pieces to the setup. I think we finally have it down. We basically contain all our little things on an oversized tray that takes up a third of the table itself. We always have a candle lit and we’re both fans of more masculine scents. Right now we’re burning Black Tie (a seasonal scent from Bath & Body Works), but we also loved Flannel (ditto).

One of my favorite touches is our little candy dish, an incidental from Target, that is completely full of pink Starbursts. That’s right- all pink! While visiting family in Myrtle Beach this past summer, my Gramma Dee took note when Kendall and I said they were the best and sent us an entire bag of pink only. It’s been a hit with us and our guests. I’m not sure where she got ours, but I found the pink gold here.

We also have a couple trinket trays to catch our chapstick and the jewelry I take off as soon as I get home. And not that we really need them with our table, but we have a really cute set of coasters in orange, navy, and grey to match the rest of the room.

While the items below aren’t exactly what we have, this gives you a basic idea of what I believe to be the perfect little set-up. And not to toot Target’s horn too much (I mean, is that even possible?) they have the cutest little things to help jazz up + refresh your space right now! Their Valentine’s Day decor isn’t overtly so, but is just cute enough to add that lil somethin’ somethin’.

During the winter, there’s often nothing that you want more than to be cozy. It’s not always an easy feeling to achieve, especially when it’s cold out. But, it is possible to transform your home into a comfortable and comforting paradise. You might need to invest a little bit of money and think outside of the box, but you can change the way your home looks and feels in very little time.

It might help to talk to friends and see what they recommend, or even pick up your favorite interiors magazine for their top tips, but you if you want an instant fix, there are seven main areas that help you can achieve a cozy home vibe before winter’s out.

Set The Ambiance

First up, you’re going to want to set the mood. Whether you choose to do it in one set room, or you cozy up to the whole house, you can make an instant difference by manipulating the atmosphere. When you’re looking to achieve a cozier home, you’re going to want to create a welcoming vibe – not only for yourself to enjoy, but your guests too. Lighting is an incredible aid in setting the right atmosphere, but music can help too. Ensure that your lighting is low and warm, and keep your music calm and relaxing.

Light A Fire

One of the easiest ways to create an immediate cozy effect is to light a fire. You may not have an open fire or a wood burner in your home, but it is likely that you have some working fire in your fireplace, even if it’s electric (and if not, it’s time to get one installed). So, crank it up and let the warming heat and roaring flames relax you and let your mind and body unwind.

Texture Up

Right next to atmosphere and warmth on the cozy scale is texture. If your decor is very minimal, with clean lines and straight edges, you might feel a little cool – even when the heating is on. So, you need to head out to your favorite home store and start shopping for the perfect soft furnishings to cozy up your home with. Have the perfect image of a cozy home in your head to guide you. Think thick wools, fluffy faux furs, decadent velvets and fun fleeces.

Scent The Space

Then, as your rooms are coming together, you’re going to want to add in the perfected finishing touches. You might have the ambience just right, thanks to your lighting and music, but there is another sense that we can cover off to keep your home as cozy as possible – smell. So far, your home looks, sounds and feels just right, but it can smell it too. Pick up some scented candles or home fragrances that put you in a relaxed mood and will set your mind at ease.

Run A Bath

Now that you’re home is pretty much finished, you’re going to want to get yourself ready to enjoy it. You could just lay on your couch and rest, but, there are a few more steps left to ensure your cozy experience is the best that it can be. By having a bath, you’re not only going to make your skin glow (which will make you feel incredible), but you can use bath oils that will relax you ready for the cozy night ahead.

Women’s Kate Spade New York Bow Print Charmeuse Pajamas

Dress Up

After your bath, you’re going to want to get dressed for the occasion. Just like you’d get all dolled up for a night out, you’re going to need to get all dolled down for a night in! When you’re trying to relax and feel as cozy as possible, you need to be wearing the right thing. Invest in quality nightwear and lounge-wear products, like those by Vanilla underwear, that are not only comfortable but easy to cuddle up in too.

Snuggle Up

When you look and feel the part, it’s time to enjoy your surroundings – you’ve haven’t worked this hard to create your cozy corner of the world and not do it right. When you want to be comfortable and calm, some of the best ways to enjoy the space are to have a movie night or even a little date night. Now that you’re feeling soothed and stress-free, and you’re in you comfy casuals, you can pick the perfect movie, make your favorite food and lay back on the couch to enjoy it all. As long as the mood is right and you’re ready to unwind, your cozy paradise will do the rest.
