I am kind of a nerd about the Pantone Color of the Year. I have patiently each year for the past few years for the colors to be announced.  Last year, I was let down with Greenery, especially after being so pleased with Rose Quartz + Serenity. This year, I actually found out early from an interior design friend. A few of us were having an intimate dinner/ drinks before a boozy 10 year high school reunion, and I’m not sure how Pantone was brought up but she proudly announced that her firm had a meeting and she was SO EXCITED for the new color.

Welcome, Ultra Violet.

I actually really love how Pantone seems to pick the colors based on what the world needs at the time.

(Note: after I typed the previous sentence, I found this quote: “The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.” – Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute. So I was kind of dead on, huh?)

From their website:

A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.

Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.

Enigmatic purples have also long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality. Nuanced and full of emotion, the depth of PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.

Historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to Ultra Violet. The color is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today’s over-stimulated world. The use of purple-toned lighting in meditation spaces and other gathering places energizes the communities that gather there and inspire connection.

I mean… does this not sound like the recipe for a better planet? If Ultra Violet represents all of the above, bring it on. Not that I’m a huge fan of purple, but the symbolism is astounding. I kind of intend to surround myself with this color for 2018.

I promised that I would get to the guys. Gifting is my love language so I have so much picking up things I know Kendall needs and wants. He’s picky but also very specific so I don’t have a hard time. My dad on the other hand… he just doesn’t really like STUFF so I have fun shopping for kitchen tools or gourmet goodies. (You know what’s really good for that- TJ Maxx!)

  1. Have him rock varsity letter in style with this fun backpack from Steve Madden, in classic flannel with a retro patch. A wealth of pockets inside and out keep your essentials organized.
  2. The finest premium oak from the American heartland is chiseled by lasers to expose every capillary which enables cask-quality aging in just day for any cocktail or spirit of his choice. Each element allows him to add robust and complex flavors like vanillins, sugars, and tannins while filtering out toxins in his spirits in just 1-4 days. Remember to taste regularly!
  3. The best-selling product in the Baxter of California range, this pomade blends natural Clay and Beeswax for unrivalled hold and texture.
  4. Plenty of card and slip pockets make this men’s Dockers wallet a must-have for any man.
  5. This ruggedly handsome hardcover collection brings together new and classic advice from Worst-Case experts to help readers master the manly arts from wrestling an alligator to calming a crying child to extinguishing backyard barbeque fires.
  6. Clinique for Men Face Scrub clears the way for the closest shave. It contains fine, non-abrasive grains that de-flake, lift his beard hair and help reduce ingrown hairs while reviving and smoothing skin.
  7. Warm him up this winter with a knit beanie that has a lining so soft he won’t want to take it off.
  8. A spiral-bound Rollbahn notebook from Delfonics of Japan- to help keep him organized in a very sleek way.
  9. Keep his beard looking exactly how he likes it whether he’s at home or on the go with the Beard Envy kit by Billy Jealousy.
  10. Organize his charging cables, power bricks, adapters and other electronic equipment in this roll-up burrito pouch guaranteed not to drip sour cream all over his backpack.
  11. Life is full of tough decisions- like choosing between matte or glossy frames. Well, enjoy the best of both with these oversized flat top square shades that offer a mixed matte and glossy finish! That was easy.
  12. This handy set contains a refreshing, moisturizing cream blended with 12 natural oils and extracts including Marula Oil and Eucalyptus and a post-razor balm mixed with soothing aloe.
  13. My Kendall loves unusual tie clips and cufflinks. The Wild & Wolf Hold It Together Cufflink & Tie Clip Set even comes with a little case to store them!
  14. Cold weather, exercise and even soap can exacerbate dryness. Save his skin with Haeckels’ nourishing balm, which has been made in England with Geranium to promote cell repair, as well as soothing Sea Lavender and Clary Sage, a natural antimicrobial.
  15. With so many different ways to style this classic accessory, the Seven 91 Buffalo Check scarf is the best way to stay warm all season long!
  16. He’ll forget how to make the perfect martini again with this recipe pocket square. He can pull this bad boy out and whip up the best drink of the night.
  17. Even tough guys need a little help to get through the winter. These patterned tech gloves fit the bill with blended fabric warmth and text-easy convenience.
  18. Anyone else’s fella go nuts over fun socks? Kendall LOVES them!
  19. Refreshing, adventurous and clean, C.O. Bigelow Elixir Blue Cologne blends aromatic watery notes, lavender and rosemary with hints of clean white musk and woody undertones.
  20. MONTBLANC Legend is the modern, signature scent of a confident and charismatic man. The deodorant stick provides long lasting protection with the seductive scent of Legend.
  21. Infused with Makers Mark bourbon and premium maple sugar, these smooth caramels have just the right amount of kick.
  22. Lucky that Kendall loves candles as much as I do, especially cozy, not overly sweet ones. The hearth candle brings the aroma of a wintertime fire, created by combining rich oud wood with frankincense and hints of smoky embers.
  23. Guys have it easy right? The can legit use one product for shampoo, conditioner, and body wash!
  24. My Mississippi man is always cold. Layers are key, and I can’t believe the price of this Perry Ellis Quarter Zip Long Sleeve Ribbed Sweater.

So March was… in like… something and out like probably the same thing (a mess) because the freaking weather has taken us all on such an emotional roller coaster. But April showers bring May flowers and now I’m giggling to myself because next April, Kendall and I will be celebrating our wedding at The Mayflower and how perfect is that? April is a special time of year for my family. My mom’s birthday is April 9th, as is my parents’ anniversary (celebrating 29 years this year WHATUP!) and my Uncle Jay and Aunt Jeanie happened to pick the same date for their own wedding 6 years later! Lots of love, lots to celebrate in April!

It’s also usually the first month of the year to really feel like spring! As much as I love getting into the winter cozies, I’m over it. Bring on the sunshine. And in that vein, I bring you my April wish list.

the carolove april wish list

  1. I’m kind of digging this Cupshe Melodic Blues One-piece Swimsuit. Has anyone ordered from Cupshe before? Thoughts?
  2. Last year, Target had this amazing straw tote with pompoms that I really wanted… until I got to the store and it was big enough I could have put a couple toddlers or a weeks worth of clothes in it. The Rainbow Pom Pom Tote from t+j is a much better size AND I love the colors!
  3. I found the Women’s Wildfox More Glitter Manchester Tee last Friday when I was super sad that our CFO was retiring. “More glitter, less bitter” is the best sad day mantra.
  4. I’m still determined to try rainbow highlighter, and at under $10, I won’t mind this little purchase once Lent is over!
  5. This is one of the cutest collabs I’ve seen! If you can’t pick just one color, the Clinique Crayola(TM) Chubby Lip Crayon Box is just the thing for you!
  6. I love my nude studded heels, but they’ve been about run into the ground. Yay for
Betseyville Naveah Gladiator Sandals and their under $50 price point!
  7. Not going to lie, part of the appeal of the Shashi Caroline Necklace is the name. But I also obviously love the style!
  8. I keep going back to these Rachelle Tassel Chandeliers from Stella & Dot.
  9. Kendall + I kind of want to have a vintage picnic themed engagement photo shoot, but for a real picnic, the ban.do Watermelon Super Chill Cooler Bag is the cutest!
  10. Yes, I’m obsessed with going to Mission for margs with my girls. The Margaritas With My Senoritas Crewneck from Tees And Tank You seems appropriate.
  11. We’ve burned through almost all of the Christmas clearance candles I stockpiled, but it’s time for fresher scents anyway! Bring on the Mimosa Kiki&Me Tumbler Candle!
  12. Stripes. Always stripes. But it doesn’t hurt to have an unexpected detail like this Women’s J.crew Ruffle Sleeve Top.
  13. Candace and I never had jellies because my mom was smart and knew they were painful, sweaty, and not great for your feet. I got the adult version for a music festival a few years ago, and quickly learned that for myself. But the Kate Spade New York Fanley T-Strap Sandal seem like a great, slightly more grown up, option.
  14. Mint is a tricky color for me, but once I have a tan, here I come for this Pintucked Swing Blouse.

Makeup is one of life’s little pleasures. Even if you have a dressing table already full to the brim, there’s always room for a little something extra. If it’s at the right price point, of course.

The makeup that we lust over, that beauty bloggers extol the virtues of, tends to be expensive. There’s something we just can’t resist about that dynamic packaging, the lushness of an expensive product, the weight of a metal compact in your hands. Makeup that can hold back the hands of time, make you feel beautiful, make you feel confident.  It feels more permanent and full of promise than the cheaper, drugstore options.

Of course, every once in awhile someone will do a “half face” feature. One half of their face will be made up using drugstore brands, the other using high-end products. “Can you see the difference?” they ask, and you find yourself squinting at the screen, wondering if you can.

In most cases like this, you can’t. So, the obvious conclusion is that money doesn’t matter when it comes to makeup. That you can achieve the same, fabulous looks with items that cost a fraction of those that are at the top and setting the trends. But is it true?

NARS Women’s Blush – Angelika vs e.l.f. Cosmetics Blush Tickled Pink||Clinique Chubby Stick Baby Tint Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm, 0.10 oz. vs CoverGirl Lip Perfection Jumbo Gloss Balm||MAKE UP FOR EVER Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation vs. Revlon PhotoReady Airbrush Effect Makeup||MAC Eye Shadow vs Nyx Cosmetics Nude Matte Eyeshadow||Dior ‘Diorshow’ Waterproof Mascara – Azure Blue 258 vs. L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Volume Building Mascara

At first glance, yes, absolutely – cheaper makeup can indeed look the same. The pigments of the eyeshadow might not be quite so strong and the finish on the face makeup might be lacking, but the overall effect tends to be pretty similar.

So does that mean you can rely on cheap makeup alone to keep you looking good, from now until the end of time? No need for expensive purchases, ignore the brands, don’t look for plastic surgery, and no more need for skincare if you can get everything you need from clever makeup tricks alone?

While at a moment’s glance you can achieve much the similar look with more affordable products, how long will it stay that way?

That’s where the problem of pigments begins to be a problem. Even with the best eye primer you can find, a low-pigmented color is going to begin to fade or even fall without a few hours. The same applies throughout the range: foundation will rub off faster, mascara will run, and lipstick will be deposited on every glass you dare to sip from. So while there might be an initial similarity, give it a couple of hours and you’d have no problem telling the difference.

So… it’s expensive products all the way? Don’t bother with more affordable alternatives?

If you’re going out for a lunch with friends and only expect to be a few hours, then there’s nothing to stop you choosing cheaper products.

If you need your makeup to stay in place all through your working day, however? Then that might be where the difference is.

Don’t forget that you can also mix and match between price points on your face. While your eye makeup might benefit from being more high-end, if you don’t mind a few applications, then your lipstick can be on the cheaper side without damaging your overall look.

Last week, I brought you my gifts for guys. This week, I’m showing love to my GALentines. Before our girl Leslie Knope made it popular, I was hosting little dinners for my best gal-pals in high school around Valentine’s Day. My family has belonged to Montgomery Country Club since I was in kindergarten, and they always helped me set up the cutest events- big or small. For this particular dinner, we bought in balloons + decor, plus they made us a special, personalized menu.

Not saying you have to go all out and host a dinner, but I do think it’s important to remember the ladies who make a positive impact on your life- supporting, uplifting, and generally making your world a brighter place. I know that Valentine’s Day is often dismissed as being created by card + candy companies, but I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again- there is nothing wrong with any day that is marked by the message of love.
