Tag Archives: Dirty Hippy Swag

A couple weeks ago, I sent a text to some of my best girls to find out if anyone wanted to shoot. It’s been harder for me to get blog pics since Alex, the girl who used to take my pics, left my firm. Sarah told me she had plans but I’d be welcome to come along and she would snap for me while we were there. I had a totally free afternoon and the plans… oh ma goodness!

Pints & Puppies

Literally. I spent the day in the sun with one of my closest friends, day drinking and petting dogs and looking at dogs and contemplating kidnapping some dogs. A portion of the proceeds went toward local charities supporting dog rescue. Can’t get any better than that. I wasn’t even thinking about it at the time but I was rocking my Turquoise & Yellow Sporty Chic Hippy – Hand-Beaded Necklace c/o Dirty Hippy Swag and they donate a portion of their proceeds to help animals too! So it was a day celebrating our furry friends.

In that vein, I have a little call to action for you guys. I have been following Hannah Shaw aka Kitten Lady on Instagram for quite a while now, but one of her newest tiny but mighty rescues has totally broken my heart. Little Chloe has a damaged spine due to abuse and no use of her back legs, but Hannah has not given up on her. It’s likely a long, expensive road ahead for this little one, who through no fault of her own is in a very rough spot. If you can, I am encouraging you to donate to help save not only Chloe but the other little lives under Hannah’s care. I myself am a new monthly donator- think about it like this- 2 trips to Starbs or help save a little life. It took me less than 5 minutes to sign up.

TGIF

This has been kind of a rough week. I hate that I’m not one of those girls who has trouble sleeping when her significant other is away but here we are. I’ve cranky, sad, sleepy, and it’s HOT OUT so I just have felt pretty off.

I’m going to Laytonsville this weekend (and probably every weekend for the next month) to get some time with my parents. Tomorrow is Joe’s Ride, so hopefully the weather will be nice for the Olney community to gather and remember the kids we have lost as a big family- including my sister. Joe’s family and my family did swim team together, but I always see many, many other familiar faces at this great event. Every year, rain is predicted, and every year, it holds off at least for the morning. #fingerscrossed

Weekend Printable Wall Art

Marisa (or Maris or Reeses, as she appears in my phone) has been in my life since we were 14. You know how certain part of your life happen in slo-mo? The first time I saw Maris it was my first day at St. Andrew’s. I barely knew anyone, and I was kind of taking it all in. Then she came running like a hurricane over to this kid I was kind of checking out and threw her hands over his eyes. He guessed who she was by her watch, she complimented his Lilly Pulitzer tie, gave him a hug, and off she went.  I have no idea why I remember that specific moment, but I do.We were in different advisor groups and, at the time, different friend groups, so I didn’t give her a whole lot of thought until I heard rumors that she was dating my ex after he broke up with me later that year. I didn’t like her because of that because I was 15 and terrible. I don’t even really know if it was a true.

I’m not sure how it happened but she and I slowly became friends, and I’m so glad we did! (So are my parents- they always loved her!) I think it was because we were in Les Mis together but I really don’t remember. All I know is that the older we got, the closer we got, the weirder we got together. She went from ultra-preppy to boho and beyond. It was kind of fun pushing the limits of our dress code- there were a lot of peasant skirts involved I can tell you that much. We listened to a lot of Panic! At The Disco and she got me into Boys Like Girls. One time, she literally ate all of the cheese in my house. On a more serious note, at a moment when I was really scared, she drew a cute portrait of me including labels to make me smile and laugh and know how much she was behind me.

We lost touch in college, but she was a solid part of my original crew. We reunited at our friend Casey’s wedding last year, and I have loved watching her business blossom. Dirty Hippy Swag is so freakin’ Marisa and I love it! I mean… did you see my awesome pants yesterday?

I’m so happy for my courageous, creative, beautiful inside and out friend, and I cannot wait to see what Dirty Hippy Swag has in store for her!

8 Reasons I Love My Life:

  1. Working for myself has been incredibly fulfilling because all the company goals come from my heart and my motivation to succeed is infinite.
  2. My boyfriend, Frederick has completely transformed my human experience. Since childhood I’ve had Major Depression and PTSD an it wasn’t until Frederick and I fell in love a couple years ago that I began to discover the joys of being alive.
  3. Living in the forest. We live in the middle of the Redwood Regional Park and our tree house is by far the most beautiful pad we have both ever lived in. I love living in the forest because I literally wake up to the squaws of Eagles. No joke, when I first moved in I thought my neighbor had an Eagle sound as a text message alert because I couldn’t fathom a real Eagle actually squawing in my yard.
  4. Animals. I’ve been volunteering and feeding an 18 year old horse named Tosca once a week for a few months now. One afternoon, while feeding Tosca on the top of these bright green rolling hills I saw a family of deer, several adorable rabbits, 1 curious coyote, 3 newts, 2 wild turkeys, 1 bald eagle, 2 hawks, and the herd of 14 horses Tosca is apart of. Nothing beats that!
  5. Friends. I’m lucky to have incredibly down to earth and creative friends.
  6. Art and Design. I love painting, beading, laser-cutting, modeling, photography, graphic design, web design, and everything art and design. I love designing screenprints and jewelry for Dirty Hippy Swag and always have a blast laser-cutting the wooden pendants.
  7. Food. I’m obsessed with food. My favorite thing to do is eat.
  8. Living in the Bay. The Bay Area is filled with opportunities to go on epic adventures, work for great companies, meet interesting people, and make dreams happen. I love living here!

7 Essentials In My Closet:

  1. Sweatpants
  2. Dirty Hippy Swag white hoodie
  3. Quantify Thy Sad black hoodie (I literally wear these top 3 things every single day. it’s hard to get me out of sweatpants and my Dirty Hippy Swag hoodies)
  4. Sports bras and bralettes. I’ve been boycotting underwire bras for years now.
  5. Sterling Silver heirloom hoop earrings from my Aunt Candy and my fake gold triple hoop earrings from Goodwill.
  6. Slip on black sneakers
  7. Summer dresses

6 Non-Electronic Things I Can’t Live Without:

  1. Eggs
  2. Extra-sharp cheddar cheese
  3. Coconut Oil. I use coconut oil every day to moisturize my body and monthly to deep condition my hair.
  4. My Passion Planner is honestly the most amazing non-electronic thing I own. It’s a calendar planner customized for the dreamers.
  5. Pooh Bear. I might regret publicly admitting this, but I’ve been sleeping with my teddy bear since I was 10 years old.
  6. Crayola markers. They make to-do lists a party on a piece of paper!

Anti Social Club – Fine Jersey T-Shirt

5 People Who Have Impacted My Life:

  1. Don, my dad, a fountain of eternal love and my greatest inspiration
  2. Jocelyn, my sister, my rock and my best friend
  3. Frederick, my boyfriend, my oak tree and my soulmate
  4. Candy, my aunt, my soul sister, my greatest role model
  5. Brian, a saint, my hero who taught me everything I need to know about operating an animal sanctuary.

4 Place I Want To Visit:

  1. The center of the earth.
  2. Outer space.
  3. An alien spaceship.
  4. Any beach in Greece.

3 Unpopular Opinions I Have:

  1. I don’t believe in the popular saying “seeing is believing” because I’m 100% positive aliens exist. I’m just impatiently waiting for them to appear above me one day.
  2. I believe that most animal species should be legally recognized as sentient beings.
  3. Equal rights equal fights. (gender equality)

2 Things That Scare You

  1. Spiders for sure. A couple years ago I called Frederick at 10:30pm terrified, crying and begging him to drive (30 minutes) to my house to discard a massive spider from my bedroom wall. He came.
  2. Heights. I am absolutely terrified of heights.

1 Quote I Live By:

“One love and fuck you.” – Diabolic, Self Destruction (Outro)

The first time I heard Diabolic say “one love & fuck you” became the last time I ever felt misunderstood. In essence, this is how I truly feel on the daily: every single living being on this planet deserves unconditional love and kindness, but I also need to set strong energetic boundaries between myself and the outside world in order to protect myself.

Now that I’ve introduced you to Dirty Hippy Swag, I wanted to show how you how I’m rocking my absolute favorite product: the Existential Crisis – White Sweatpants. This was before an actual workout in the little gym at my apartment complex- no makeup, yesterday’s hair, and my sweet fiance setting me up for these shots.

One of the things I particularly love about Dirty Hippy Swag is that the “company encompasses hoodies, sweatpants, and t-shirts: things we wear when we want to feel safe.” Generally, I feel safe. I feel safe in my relationships with friends and family, safe in that I have an adorable apartment to go home to, food to eat, and a job to sustain them both. I’ve never had to deal with violent or otherwise unpleasant discrimination due to my race or sexuality.

My issues with safety come from within. I can be insecure, worry too much, get too inside my own head and sometimes that can be a scary place. It’s the worst when I don’t even know why I’m panicked and I can’t control it. And sometimes it’s OK to just curl up in something soft and secure until I calm down. It’s happening less frequently than it used to, to be sure, but sometimes I just need a good cry, a good run, or a funny movie.

When I opened my sweet package c/o Dirty Hippy Swag, I had a handwritten note from Marisa telling me that I had her permission to dirty up these white sweatpants. (They are super soft by the way! I’m wearing a small and they’re a bit long, but I love the way they fit on my booty.) I’m not sure if she understands how refreshing that was. In my professional world- everything has to be perfect (dealing with other people’s money tends to be like that). In my blogging world, every move is on social media and documented to be dissected. In these sweatpants, in my backyard, I was just comfy, giggly me, showing off the brand one of my friends has worked so hard for.

So be comfortable in your own skin. And if you’re not, try to make it that way. Get a little dirty, put on something soft- it’ll be OK.

.

Thank you to Dirty Hippy Swag for gifting me with Existential Crisis – White Sweatpants. As always, all opinions are my own!

You may have noticed I’ve been posting a lot of a new brand on my Facebook page (give it a follow if you haven’t already). I am so proud to announce that Dirty Hippy Swag, the brainchild of  Marisa Rheem, one of my best high school friends, launches TODAY! Thank you to another St. Andrew’s classmate of mine, Kelly Stewart, who is working alongside Marisa, for penning the press release below.

Existential Crisis – White Sweatpants

Dirty Hippy Swag is an e-commerce startup, exclusively located online at www.dirtyhippyswag.com. With an ever-expanding collection, Dirty Hippy Swag specializes in comfortable street style apparel, as well as laser-cut designed and hand-beaded jewelry.

Founder and Designer Marisa Rheem believes in having clothes and jewelry that truly speak to her customers, making them feel safe and stylishly armored. As fellow millennial Madeline Harmon enthuses, “self-care and fashion have never looked so good!” It’s no accident that this company encompasses hoodies, sweatpants, and t-shirts: things we wear when we want to feel safe.

A fashion line emblazoned with cheeky, unwelcoming statements, Dirty Hippy Swag is the perfect platform to send a humorous yet powerful message. From their “Existential Crisis” sweatpants to their “Anti Social Club” necklace, Dirty Hippy Swag’s apparel and laser-cut designed jewelry allow you to clearly convey your mood to those around you without even needing to speak. Instead of feeling guilty and apologetic about needing time to unwind, slip into some Dirty Hippy Swag and let your clothes shield you from the outside world’s demands.

Oakland’s fresh new enterprise answers an unmet need for socially relevant fashion. Dirty Hippy Swag celebrates their customers’ purchasing power by transforming it into an opportunity to give back. By donating a portion from every purchase to trusted animal rescue organizations around the world, Dirty Hippy Swag bridges the gap between pursuing individual style and fulfilling our collective social responsibility as caretakers of this planet.

At the start of each new quarter, customers and fans can vote for their favorite animal rescue organization to become the next quarter’s beneficiary. This first season’s inaugural beneficiary is Rocket Dog Rescue, an all-volunteer nonprofit group dedicated to saving homeless and abandoned Bay area animals from euthanasia. Dirty Hippy Swag’s ultimate mission is to support the hardworking, silent heroes who dedicate their blood, sweat and tears to saving animals each and every day. By enhancing your wardrobe with Dirty Hippy Swag, you can help bring this vision to life.

For press inquiries, promotion opportunities, collaborative ventures, high-resolution images, or to book an interview, contact Marisa Rheem at 301-802-0551 or email, dirtyhippyswag@gmail.com, or visit the website at www.dirtyhippyswag.com. 8016 Shepherd Canyon Rd., Oakland, CA. 94611
