It’s kind of funny, as I was thinking about writing this post I got a text from Roxanne, who is Jewish, asking if I grew up shopping for Easter dresses, since this is obviously not something she’s experienced. And WOW that takes me back- shopping for Easter dresses used to be such. a. big. deal. And for whatever reason (maybe it was just cute) Candace and I had to agree on dresses so we would match. For many years, there was a little hat involved in the situation too. We would go out to Tyson’s Corner or Montgomery Mall (usually not Lakeforest- BLECH!) and hit up all the department stores and it was always, at least from what I remember, a fun girls’ day with Mama D.

Now that I’m older, there isn’t such fanfare around the actual shopping for the dresses, but I always dress up extra nice for Easter, usually in something I get for my birthday. Since Rox asked, this year I’m wearing the Camilla Shirtdress from Cabi- probably with nude mules and a cardigan.

Sidebar: I actually always dress up for church in general. I know it’s more important that you be there at all, but I will never be there in jeans. No sir no how.

Anyway, I guess I’m just saying that it’s fun to dress up for what’s really the most important holiday (at least to me) in the Christian church. But that’s not to say you have to break the bank doing it. I tend to have a lot of luck at Charming Charlie, and as I’m actually home in the ‘burbs this weekend and doing some shopping with Mama, I might take a little looky-loo.

If you’re not familar, Charming Charlie is also a one-stop shop. Think Forever 21 prices, slightly better quality, and organized by color. That’s right. COLOR. So you can run in and find your coordinating pieces ASAP. Since you have barely a week to figure out your Easter outfit situation, this could be helpful. A no, this post wasn’t sponsored, I just love how their stores are set up, the price point, and the endless collection of their cute little pieces to complete an outfit. This is just one outfit I’ve put together, but the options are infinite!

One of my favorite trends to come out this spring has been statement earrings, and I know I’m not the only one! (Um hi BaubleBar, can we get these back in stock please?) I think I like the idea so much because statement earrings are such a good way to show your personality, even if you have a strict dress code. And this might sound totally weird, but to me they’re like a less inyourface version of the pompom sandal that it seemed like only bloggers were wearing last year. Does that make any sense?

I remember when I first got my ears pierced. I was in 9th grade and I fiddled with the studs so much that they actually popped out, got infected, and I had to have them re-pierced. When I could finally get to the point that I could safely change out of my sparkly safety studs, I was ecstatic. Even then, I was all about that statement earring life. I ended up getting two holes in each ear, and every outfit went with specific earrings. My favorite pair was from either Claire’s or Hot Topic. One was a guitar pick and the other a guitar because I was so ~*edgy*~. Now it’s kind of totally a thing to have mismatched ears!

The past couple years, I haven’t been great about wearing earrings at all. Just like everything else about me, my ears are super sensitive. If I remember, I put in either simple posts or easy Kendra Scott dangles, but some of the awesome statement earrings I’ve seen recently may have me going back to my old ways!

Remember last week or whenever how it got nice? And then it freaking SNOWED at the end of the week? And it wasn’t even nice snow it was gobs of slush. Gross. I was so ready for the week to end already and that was just the ice(ing) on the cake.

Anyway, I guessss it’s ok because it gave me a chance (maybe my last one of the season) to rock my Topshop from Nordstrom leopard fur coat (last seen here). I wanted to be both cozy and cute as I slid into the weekend and I think I got this.

Now, let’s talk weekend essentials. You know I love a good backpack, but the one I got last year was a little small. Hi gorgeous Eddie Borgo for Target Backpack in Thunder. The backpack so nice that my mom bought me the same one. And if you’re constantly on the go like me, you probably have a snack or two in your bag. When Myprotein asked if I could try some of their products, I jumped at the chance. I ordered Protein Cookies in white almond, Protein Chox in caramel nut, and their 100% peanuts peanut butter. I’ll be honest, the cookies were a little too almond-y for me, it was almost overpowering. And I could really taste whatever extra protein was in it. But the chox were great! They taste like a heartier snickers and are definitely better for your if you’re like me and have a 3:30 in the afternoon chocolate craving. The peanut butter? On apples, one of my favorite snacks/ deserts.

How do you get ready for the weekend?

How ’bout this weather, huh? I’m currently putting this post together at 1:33PM on Wednesday and it’s 77 degrees and looks like  storm might hit in a little. There is also a chance of snow on Friday. WHAT?! And this is why everyone is sick and miserable.

Last Saturday, in the middle of my feeling pretty nasty, it was simply gorgeous out in the morning in DC. Because I wasn’t feeling so hot, I was actually extra warm and the thought of wearing much of anything was not appealing. Kendall was gearing up for his monthly trip to Mississippi for drill, and I was heading out to my meet my mom for lunch and light wedding planning. Of course I’m going to grab a good old Old Navy sundress and go from there. Urban Expressions had sent me a couple new pretty bangs to replace my broken Gia, and I couldn’t wait to take my Faith for a spin. The light blue + pink combo was giving me total rose quartz + serenity vibes. Of course my music-lovin’ self is adoring the guitar strap purse trend, and the studs make it even just a little bit edgier.

Something else I’m loving right now? I stepped from my silver to a lavender CELEB LUXURY VIRAL COLORWASH shampoo. It’s definitely more bold, but I love that it goes in and out of my hair so easily. In couple washes with “normal” shampoo, I can be back to blonde. I’m just having fun with it. I kind of like my unicorn/ fairy/ troll/ whatever hair, and I’ve been getting compliments from just about everyone but Mama D who I think is having flashbacks to when I was Avril Lavigne for several months in college. If you want to try it yourself in a more contained way, DCists can hop over to Illusions and get some fun color up in that hurr professionally. My DC stylist, Amanda, has me hooked! What do you think about it, honestly?

Trolls was honestly one of the cutest movies I’ve ever seen and despite the fact that it’s been months since we saw it, I listen to the soundtrack once about every day. My favorite scene is my favorite song, Get Back Up Again, sung by Anna Kendrick as Poppy. It’s been kind of my go-to pep me up song since I saw the movie, and I was feelin’ it especially this past Friday.

It’s not much of a secret that I fell into my job by accident. My CFO and my boss are behind me 100% in my attempt at moving careers into something I’m more interested in. Last week, I had an interview that went well, but for the third time in the past year, it came down between myself and someone with more experience. I was crushed. Every time that happens all I hear is, “well, you’re not *quite* good enough.” It hurts, it stings and it can be really hard to dust myself off and keep trying. But you know what? I got myself some Chipotes for lunch, listened to Poppy repeatedly say GET BACK UP AGAIN, and had a wonderful happy hour with friends.

It’s not always cupcakes and rainbows and glitter- but for me, it is a lot of the time. Something great is around the corner for me, for sure, but I can’t forget that in the now, I’m surrounded by love and good people and I’m happy, safe, and taken care of.

Trolls may have been a movie for kids, but the moral was basically that you are responsible for your own happiness- there’s no magic cheat that can make you happy. Not that the fact that it was a kid’s movie would deter me- the shirt is from the Trolls collection at Macy’s (I got it for $3 so it’s totally gone now) and the kicks are kids’ from Target (my specialty).

What makes you happy when you’re feeling down?
