Winter is well and truly upon us and it can be the harshest time of year for our skin. Cold weather, dry heat and rain or snow is a recipe for disaster when it comes to keeping your skin in good condition. That’s why it’s so important to take extra care during the Winter months. So, what can you do to make sure your skin stays clear, full of moisture and glowing?

Switch to Warm

When you come in from the freezing cold at the end of the day, it’s so tempting to run a hot bath or shower to warm yourself up. Of course, there will be times when that’s needed and deserved, but if you really want to take care of your skin, warm temperatures may be better. Going from cold to hot could do your skin more damage than you realize. Try washing your face in lukewarm water with a face cloth at the end of the day.

Focus on Moisturizing

Moisturizing is never more important that it is during the Winter. You’ll probably find that your skin loses moisture even after washing, so it’s a good idea to moisturize immediately after. You can find some of the best Winter moisturizers at Moisturizers.com. Don’t be afraid to use your moisturizer liberally through the Winter. Your skin will need it!

Choose Your Products Wisely

Many women use a number of different products on their faces every day. From cleansers and toners to makeup and face wipes. During the Winter months, it’s important to be aware of the ingredients present in your products. For example, some products containing petroleum can work to dry out your skin further. The best products you can use on your face during this time contain natural oils that aid your skin in restoration. Lavender and Chamomile are especially soothing on dry skin.

Protect Your Skin

Your skin needs a little extra help to fight against the elements during Winter. You can keep your skin protected by dressing suitably for the cold weather. Gloves will protect the sensitive skin on your hands and scarves will protect your neck from the wind. If you’re lucky enough to experience some sunshine during your Winter, it’s also important to remember to wear sunscreen. Even if there’s snow on the ground, the sun can still burn.

Stay Hydrated

It’s easy to forget about hydration in the Winter because we often switch from drinking water and other cold drinks to drinking teas, coffees and hot chocolates. However, these warmer drinks don’t often provide enough hydration for our bodies. If you notice your skin becoming dry, try switching a few of your teas for bottled water instead. Drinking water during Winter will also help you to steer clear of the flu if your colleagues are coughing and sneezing around you.

Turn Down the Heat

We survive in Winter by turning up the heat in our homes and our cars. However, this kind of dry heat is no good for your skin and you may find yourself breaking out in spots or having difficulty applying makeup smoothly. You can avoid this kind of damage to your skin by turning the heat down or using a humidifier in your home. The humidifier will work to restore the moisture in your home and effectively, your skin too.

Overnight Conditioning

There are certain parts of your body that may become drier quicker than others. These are usually the hands, feet, elbows and knees where the skin is thinner. Luckily, there are plenty of moisturizing treatments to choose from that can work overnight to lock in moisture in your skin. For example, you can buy gloves filled with deep moisturizing creams that you can wear throughout the night and take off in the morning. The same goes for socks and face masks.

Exfoliate

Many people make the mistake of believing that exfoliating will dry out already dry skin. That isn’t the case. Without exfoliating, your dead skin cells are left to build up and create a barrier against moisture. If moisture is blocked from getting into your skin, your skin suffers. It’s important to exfoliate at least once a day during Winter so your skin is free to accept the moisture from creams and other products.

Go Makeup Free

When you get a day off, and all you want to do is stay indoors in your pajamas, forget the makeup too. Makeup can include toxins and irritants that make Winter skin much harder to manage. Giving your face a day off from the products you usually use will give it the freedom to heal and breathe. Just one day could be enough to give your skin the detox it needs.

Facial Mask

DIY Masks

Sometimes, your facial skin needs a little extra attention. However, that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on expensive treatments. In fact, a lot of the best ingredients for soft and smooth skin will already be in your kitchen cupboards. For example, honey is good for calming irritated skin and coconut oil is good for restoring moisture. Find some DIY recipes that suit your skin type and spend an evening pampering your skin.

Eat a Balanced Diet

You are what you eat, as they say. It’s easy to indulge in our favorite foods this time of year, but they aren’t always the best choice for your skin. Don’t forget to get a good variety of fruit and veg in your diet because they contain vital vitamins and nutrients your skin needs to stay as healthy as possible. If you find it difficult to add fruits and veg to your diet around this time of year, try taking a multivitamin supplement instead. That way, your skin is covered even if your diet isn’t.

Pampering skin during the Winter can seem like a full-time job, but if you want to glow your way through all those Christmas parties, it’s something you have to stay on top of. Remember, a beautiful smile is the best accessory you can wear.

Blocked pores can be a real nightmare. They stop the skin from breathing, help to harbor infection, and can lead to annoying breakouts that ruin your confidence. But the good news is that you don’t have to live with your blocked pores forever. There are things you can do.

In general, there are two types of blocked pores. The first is called comedones. These are primarily small raised bumps on the surface of your skin. Often, they’re not inflamed or red at all, and you can only usually see them if light is shining on them at just the right angle. But one of their defining features is that they never seem to come to a head and the pus underneath never gets to escape. They become a kind of permanent part of your facial landscape and something you can often become unconsciously accustomed to over time.

The other type of blocked pores is blackheads. Most people think that blackheads are caused by dirt getting into the pores and causing them to go black. But what’s actually happening is that the body’s own sebum is becoming hardened within the pore itself, leading to a darker color. If you’ve ever squeezed out a blackhead, you’ll have seen this waxy stuff on the tips of your fingers.

Reduce Inflammation In Your Body

Most regular people don’t know this, but it’s something practically every celebrity knows: what you eat directly determines the quality of your skin. If you eat great, your skin looks great: if you eat lousily, your skin looks lousy. Most people know that if they eat plants high in phytochemicals – like broccoli, sweet potatoes, kale, carrots and so on – then these phytochemicals get incorporated into their skin, giving them a natural glow. But few people know that other foods, especially processed foods and animal products, actually increase inflammation under the skin, leading to higher white blood cell counts and more pus production. Pus under the skin leads to whiteheads, blackheads, blocked pores and closed comedones.

Chamomile and Willow Bark Sugar Scrub

Exfoliate Twice A Week

Exfoliation helps to stop the process that leads to the formation of waxy residues inside the pores themselves and is especially effective for people who have large, open pores. There is a list of best exfoliators at Exfoliate.com which catalogs their strengths and weaknesses. Some exfoliators are great and what they do and gentle on your skin, but they can often smell bad or cost a lot of money. Finding the perfect balance for your skin is essential so that you end up benefiting, not losing out, from using exfoliators.

Floral Facial Steam

Use Herbal Topical Treatments

Stylecaster.com says that herbs, like parsley and thyme, can be used to help your skin exfoliate. Just as these herbs help to scrub cholesterol and fat from your stomach when you eat, they also contribute to remove oily, potentially pore-clogging substances from your face too. To make yourself a parsley and thyme face wash, leave the herbs to steep in water overnight to release all their natural goodness. Then apply the water to your face gently with a cloth.

Did you know skincare should change with the seasons? Of course it should! As the weather changes, our skin needs different routines from us. When we go on holiday, we find ourselves wearing less make-up, leaving our hair as it’s natural wavy self and altogether being more as God intended us. There’s a reason for that. Not only is it less effort but it makes sense in the sun. So, as Spring finally appears, what do we need to change?

Bobbi Brown Hydrating Gel Cream/1.7 oz.

Moisturizer

Our poor faces have been riddled with cold weather and dry heat from inside heating and car heaters. It’s time to get the moisture back into our skin without it being sucked right back out. Go for a cream that has a healing or protective element to it. Moisturizers with vitamin E are perfect.

Pure Lavender Sunscreen SPF 45 by Alba Botanica (4oz Sunblock)

Take Sunblock Everywhere

Our Spring months are becoming more and more unpredictable. It’s possible to have snow on the mountains and a heat wave in the same week these days. You never really know when you’ll need sunblock but it’s so important for your skin. Having the best sunblock for your face and neck areas when you’re out about will be handy.

Cleanse and Exfoliate

We’re often outside for longer during the Spring and Summer months. The days seem longer because we have more light and it’s much more fun. However, this means that we’re more likely to pick up additional grime and bacteria on our skin. Good cleansers and exfoliators will be vital to keeping your skin clean and glowing. Cleanse with a gentle cleanser twice a day, and exfoliate with a natural exfoliator three times a week.

Estee Lauder Resilience Lift Firming/Sculpting Eye Creme/0.5 oz.

Eye Cream

Have you noticed yourself squinting a lot more recently? Or perhaps reaching for the sunglasses? Of course, we’re exposed to more sun this time of year which can mean our eyes take a battering. Investing in a decent eye cream will do those little black bags wonders. It will also work towards stopping any fine lines from developing. Top tip – Use an anti-wrinkle eye cream, no matter what age you are!

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer

Make-up Shopping

Now here’s one we can all get on board with! Make-up shopping! As the seasons change, so does our make-up. We tend to go for lighter tones and lighter foundations as the sun comes out. While you’re shopping, keep in mind that it’s a good idea to look for make-up that provides sun protection too. I just made sure my “everyday face” routine included an SPF since I know I’ll be out in the sun more.

Updating Your Wardrobe

You may be wondering what that has to do with your skin routine, but a lot of your wardrobe does, especially your accessories. For example, a hat that covers your head and shades your neck will give you protection when the sun is out. Dodgy sun burns are not a good look and certainly not good for your health. Make sure you have suitable hats, sunglasses, shoes and cover-ups that will serve you well in any scenario.

No matter what you do to update your skincare for Spring, be sure to enjoy the season!

Everyone always tells us to act our age, but few ever say look your age! In fact, there is a lot of time and money plowed into the complete opposite. Getting your skin to look younger and healthier is a big deal for most women, with some going as far to go under the knife to achieve the result that they want. But if you not quite ready for such drastic action, what else can you do to defy the aging process and look a little below your actual age? Read on to find out.

Kiehl’s Since 1851 Women’s Deep Cleansing Exfoliating Face Wash

Get your basics right

So, before you go onto any of the more complicated treatments for your face, you need to make sure that you are getting the basics correct. A lot of women make mistakes here that can serious cause the skin on their face and neck to age.

For example, if you are scrubbing your face with an exfoliating, or exfoliating cream, it’s probably time to stop. While it feels s great to have a super clean face. The only people that really need to regularly use an exfoliating scrubs are ones that have particularly oily skin.

Otherwise, all you are doing is damaging the skin unnecessarily. It’s much better to use a gentle moisturizing face wash instead. Remember you do not want to dry out your skin at all.

Paula’s Choice Resist Hyaluronic Acid Booster

Some added daily help

Of course, getting a youthful glow is not all about how you wash your face, there are other things that you can do to promote healthy, taught skin as well.

For example, you may choose to use a night cream, which is a heavier moisturizer that is applied before you go to bed. This allows the cream the entire night to be absorbed, and do its work, giving you a more hydrating effect.

Hydration of the skin is vital for a youthful look, and night cream is not the only way to achieve this. In fact, there are some hyaluronic acid serums like the one from OZ Naturals, that are designed to refresh tired skin. They work because the hyaluronic acid is able to hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water. Which helps the skin to appear younger, plumed up and healthy.

Ahava ‘Time To Clear’ Purifying Mud Mask

Some occasional extra help

As well as including a little added daily help in your skincare routine it can be a wise idea to invest in your face by doing a few spa treatments now and again. Not only as this luxurious and relaxing but you can choose ones that are particularly good for your face like a mud facial.

Spa Sonic PRO Skin Care System

Don’t forget to take your makeup off

Lastly, one of the most damaging things we can do in your skincare routine is to leave your makeup on overnight. Not only is it unhygienic, because all the dirt from they day is being pressed right against your face. But the skin can’t breathe or rehydrate either. So it is vital that it comes off every time.

To do this make sure that you steer clear of normal soap and water. As the PH of the soap is usually too drying to be used on your face every day. Instead use a rotating brush or a gentle cleanser to get the desired result.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and while that is definitely the case, it’s not always that easy to be kind when you’re looking at yourself. For whatever reason, we always want more. We want to be more beautiful, healthier, and happier. So much so, that it can feel like we’re on an endless mission to make it happen. Now, knowing that you can get there in half the time is a good thing, right? Well, you can. Beauty tips exist for a reason: to be used. So read on, discover something new and start liking what you see when you look at yourself, by finally becoming the best version of yourself.

Sleep Straight

A lot of people underestimate the importance of sleep. Sleeping not only helps us to get more energy, but it’s also great for beauty too. Hence the saying ‘beauty sleep’. When you sleep well (think 7 hours or more), your body can repair. When it repairs, collagen is made! And we all know that collagen is a wonder for keeping wrinkles at bay. Plus, if you can, try to sleep on your back – it’s the only way to stop your skin from wrinkling while you sleep.

Love Oils

If you’ve always wanted to improve the appearance of your hair, you’re going to want to start showing oils some love. You might think that oils will make your hair greasier, but when you use them correctly, they do the exact opposite. They’re nourishing, smoothing and even give your hair that celeb-grade shine. Add coconut, argan, or almond oil to your ends, and you’ll soon notice a difference.

Reducing Cellulite

Cellulite is something we all suffer from. No matter how big or small your body is, all women have cellulite somewhere, at some point in their lives. You think that would make it all the more accepting, but it doesn’t. So, instead, we need to work on that. But, before you rush ahead and think you need liposuction to fix it, you can try home remedies. Body brushing is a great way to increase blood flow and break down your cellulite and reduce it’s appearance. So give it a try before you opt for more radical alternatives.

Brighten Up

We always think about our body size and how we look, but we often neglect some of the more important details – like our eyes. Our eyes have the power to say so much. They express emotions and display our health. So, you need to start taking more care. Eye drops are a way to do that, especially the kind that keep them moisturized and brighten up the whites.

Boosting Radiance

If there were one eternal beauty issue that we’d all be chasing the answer for, it would be radiant skin. Skin care can cover so much, but when your skin is fresh, radiant and dewy, nothing else matters. Despite popular opinion, radiant skin is attainable. By exfoliating regularly to remove dead skill cells and staying hydrated (both inside with water and outside with moisturizer), radiant skin can quite easily be yours.
