Happy Friday! Last weekend was so full of love and excitement and this one will be too! Tonight is my work holiday dinner, tomorrow morning is a Friendsmas Brunch at Lavagna, and then I’m going back to Laytonsville so that Kendall and I have some separate time to wrap presents!

Essie inspired earrings! Yes- the nail polish! How amazing is this idea? via SizzInWonderland

Ok so maybe it’s just because this cold and then extreme heat indoors has made me itchy and dry but I’ve been craving body butter. And Saturday Morning Cereal Whipped Body Butter sounds delicious! via UniquelyMebyVee

Because of a rather embarrassing breakout problem around my neck + chest, I’ve been wearing more statement earrings than necklaces recently. 2 Pairs of Tassel Dangle Earrings for under $10? That sounds like a steal! via Amazon

Don’t forget you can always peek at my wish list over in my sidebar. Here’s what I’m currently craving:

Around the internet

There’s a Jonathan Adler candle I actually registered for that seems to be sold out. Turns out, Pier 1 has a dupe. Check out their Vanilla Bourbon Cocktail Filled Candle!

If you saw any of my pics from the gorgeous Winter Wonderland Bridal Luncheon my Aunt Jule threw me, you can tell I don’t shy away from a sequin. All of the snaps to Katie for pulling off the bold sequin legging look!

Despite my mom’s wishes, I used loooove watching The Simpsons with my dad. Now that I’m older, I can appreciate some of the humor I didn’t get when I was little PLUS I can understand the cultural and social references that went over my head. I find it fascinating when The Simpsons predicts the future. Guess what- it happened again! via MSN

I feel like there are two camps at Christmas: those who love eggnog and those who do not. It’s not the ONLY Christmas cocktail, you know. I found 40 easy holiday cocktails to please everyone on your naughty and nice lists. via Delish

Thanksgiving is barely a week away- the holidays are about to be in full swing. This year, Kendall and I are driving (yes, driving) to Baton Rouge after dinner at my parents’ house for a wedding on Saturday morning. It’s a 17 hour drive on a good day. Seeing as how it’s Thanksgiving weekend, I’m guessing we’re going to spend upwards of 40 hours in the car together next weekend. Jesus take the wheel.

Usually, Black Friday is a girls’ day situation with my mom and Auntie Steph. We go to Columbia Mall, early-ish, have lunch, shop until around 4. It’s relaxed but we definitely have a mission and a list. We never, ever shop on Thanksgiving Day.

Fist of all, it’s family time for us. Second of all, I cannot and will not go into a store staffed with employees who are not able to go home and spend time with their own families. It was hard enough on me working black Friday and the day after Christmas when I was in retail, but thankfully Pier One is one of the stores that shuts its doors completely for the holiday.

Check out my list of retailers who have pledged to stay closed on Thanksgiving, and consider giving your patronage to them!

A more complete list and additional information can be found here.

Working at Pier 1, I had odd hours, but I have to give them props that we never worked on holidays- Christmas Eve + New Year’s Eve, sure. But I was always done with plenty of time for Midnight Mass for the former and champagne on the latter. This year, rather than bringing you Black Friday sales (hint: they’re everywhere!) I’m bringing you stores that support their employees by staying C L O S E D on Thanksgiving. It’s so important to be able to have that family time, and I so appreciate the stores, including my Pier 1, that do so.

If you’re looking to shop small this year rather than head to a typical retailer, you might want to check out some of my favorite Etsy shops:

  • Harp and Squirrel– not only can you get custom illustrations and original prints done by one of my favorite artists (I love the whole Bruckner family, really), they also have some adorable baby stuff
  • The Trendy SparrowChic apparel & gifts for the fashionable boss lady, I would wear/ use just about anything from her! Plus I adore Lindzi!
  • Tees And Tank You Shop– Quirky graphic tees, tanks, and sweatshirts. I own two.
  • Tints Shades Fine Art– Minimalist prints for a TON of different fandoms, also customize-able.  Kendall and I have a lion king print in our living room that artist Jocelyn changed the background color for and added text.
  • CelebriscentsCreative Scented Soy Candles for Special Occasions. I’m all about scented candles and it’s always nice to find scents I love for a bargain. These also have fun names. So far my favorite from this shop has been It’s A Boy (baby powder scented). These make great stocking stuffers!
  • This isn’t Etsy, but The Pretty Pink Rooster is a boutique a chic online boutique that showcases the most stylish jewelry, all for under $50.00! You may remember this shop from the #wcw post I did on their founder, Alexandra.

If you want to shop LOCAL this year:

  • Zen In A Jar– Luxury Care for the Mind | Body | Space
  • Whistle & Wild– A Boutique that caters to the one who doesn’t have a “fixed look”. Whistle & Wild carries an array of bohemian pieces as well as polished date-night looks. Most of (if not all) of the pieces that Amanda carries are made in the USA!
  • Trade Roots– a Fair Trade gift store and coffee shop located in Arlington, Virginia specializing in eco-friendly fair trade gifts from around the world.
  • Cherry Blossom Creative– Funny enough, I first heard of them when my sorority sister in Wisconsin sent me a beautiful map of Georgetown as a housewarming gift when I first moved into the city. I love the idea of hyper-localism.
  • Violet Boutique– the Washingtonian woman’s go-to shop for fun, trendy looks that easily go from work to weekend – and most for under $100.
  • For lots of local vendors at once, be sure to check out Streetmarket 2016: A Curated Holiday Pop-Up (Thursday, December 15, 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m) +
Downtown Holiday Market (opens Friday, November 25, and will run continuously through Friday, December 23.  Hours will be from Noon to 8 pm each day.)

Don’t forget that if you want to skip the Black Friday madness all together and shop in your pajamas from your couch, you should really sign up for ebates. You can earn cash back at so many places, and it’s super easy to sign up and start earning right away!

I’d love to know of more places staying closed on Thanksgiving, your favorite small shops, and best local treasures! Let me know in the comments, and have a very safe and happy holiday weekend!

One of the best, and equally, worst parts of working at Pier One was getting to decorate the store for holidays. I say best because our holiday decor was always amazing and worst because, like in most retail, the holidays were forced upon us so early that by the time the holiday actually came around we were sick of it. You might not know what I mean until you’ve stayed up until 2 am putting out sparkly skulls… in August. Or until you have sunburn from unloading the gigantic Christmas truck from 5:45am to 3:30pm… in October. As I was unloading, I was usually making a mental wishlist of everything I loved, but I so do enjoy being able to pack said items away and bring them back out when seasonally appropriate.

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably saw my sweet little seasonal corner, all done up in its Halloween finest. I’ve gotten so many compliments on my sparkly Halloween decor (mostly from Pier 1, of course), and wanted to share some of my favorite fall (let’s be real- Halloween) pieces from around the internets under $50. October just started, you have time to run amuck amuck amuck decorating, especially at that price point!
