I cannot start today’s post without first thanking everyone for the support on my post yesterday. It meant the world to me how receptive and understanding folks were to my thoughts on a subject that is on my mind each and every day. It actually opened the door to a couple conversations that I think needed to be had as well. Thank you, sincerely, from the bottom of my heart.

Ok- so back to the regularly scheduled programming.

I have described the town where I grew up as equal parts Lilly Pulitzer and camo. I have a Realtree camo hat with a pink monogram. A little bit country, a little bit preppy. Now engaged to an Army man, I actually asked Kendall what he thought of camo clothes, because I would never want to offend him by turning what he works for into some fashion that he finds frivolous.

“I don’t like it.”

“Can you elaborate?”

“It’s green.” (green is his least favorite color)

He also thought it was RULL dumb when Forever 21 was selling what were essentially recently retired PT (physical training) t shirts for $40. (He said he’d sell you his for $20. He also said they’re like $7 for a pack of them so he’s price gouging you too). But I look good in green and he doesn’t mind me wearing camo and I still like it so there you go.

My mom is seriously the hostess with the mostest. You saw it first with the tea party for Little Jules, and this past weekend she hosted another bridal shower for her co-worker, Rachael. She’s one of my mom’s “quad babies” or part of the “quad squad” of first grade teachers out in portables at their school. Rachael got engaged a week after I did, and even though I had never met any of the squad, they came over to my mom’s to celebrate both engagements and even brought us both a little goodie bags. Rachael, along with Sarah and Erica, have been amazing friends to my mom and have become friends of mine as well since we’re all about the same age. Erica actually gives my mom updates from my Instagram which I think is great, and Erica and Sarah were a huge help in readying Casa Downing for the pearl and purple themed tea party.

This was kind of the “work” shower, so it was more of an intimate gathering. There was a build your own mimosa bar, a ton of food, and a great tea service that probably would have been more popular if the weather wasn’t so warm (but it made for a great centerpiece for the party.) One of my favorite details was that my mom put her own pearls on the chandeliers in our dining room and kitchen. Sarah made adorable favors with purple and sparkly hand sanitizers from Bath and Body works so it looked like they were wearing little veils. The game of the day was that everyone wore a pearl necklace that started out with a mini clip. If you said the word “wedding” and got caught, you lost your clip to whoever caught you. The winner with the most pins won a candle! It was a really sweet afternoon and I was so happy to be included!

My outfit for the day was a super fun set that I grabbed from the last Lilly Pulitzer after-party sale. It was one of those things I knew I had to have but had no idea where I would wear it. Luckily, a shower on a warm day was perfect! The two-piece set is kind of a new-to-me style, but I loved the way that the subtle crop really just looked like a flirty sundress. It was lose enough I could eat all the fun party snacks I wanted and not feel like my outfit was trapping me.

Back when I was shooting with Nicole, I lost my SD card with a shoot on it that then never made it to the blog. Somehow, it resurfaced when Kendall and I moved. I hadn’t given it a lot of thought until I lost ANOTHER SD card (those tiny little suckers!), ordered a new one with a mini, then Kendall needed the mini for our GoPro. So I stuck in the SD card I found, complete with my Taylor Swift concert outfit from two summers ago.

So much has changed in the past 2 years- I moved out of my first apartment and into a new one with a boy. I got engaged. My blog has changed and grown immensely. I was witness to some of my best and oldest friends getting married. I’ve made amazing new friends, fallen out of touch with others, acquired more self-confidence than I’ve ever known, and finally feel as settled as I’m going to be as a millennial in kind of a crazy time.

But so many things have also naht changed. I still get panic attacks, but I know how to deal with them and surround myself with people who help me through them, whether they know it or not. I refuse to give up my quirky and somewhat juvenile style, I’ll rock the hell out of my sneaker wedges, and I’m still obsessed with weddings. I still don’t love my job, but I’m going to keep working my ass off and giving it my all (and interviewing elsewhere when something interesting comes up).

Think back over your last two years- what has changed for you? What hasn’t? I’d love to know in the comments!

Spring is in full swing in The District. Between the April showers, the beginning of tourist season, the allergies, and the generally unpredictable yo-yo weather that is so typical of this area (year-round), it’s sometimes easy to forget how lovely this time of year can really be. This past weekend, in my own neighborhood and despite the rain, I happened upon one of the prettiest trees I’ve ever seen. The flowers + the lush greenery in my neighborhood always make me kind of pause and appreciate how gorgeous this city really is. It’s sometimes hard to believe it really is a city. I work downtown, but even there the squares and parks become like little their own little green oasis.

Basically, what I’m trying to say is we should all take a moment to appreciate the green outdoors. In planning our engagement/ save the date pictures, Kendall and I have discussed a little bit of a vintage picnic theme. There’s no reason though that we shouldn’t just take one of our free days (ha. few and far between.) and go on a real picnic of our own for a date. My dad has been trying to get us to go to Wagshal’s, a deli near us, since before we moved in, and I think it would be so fun to pick up a couple sandwiches, chips, and drinks and head out to enjoy a sunny Saturday. Now all we need is a free day (a girl can dream).

Have you picnicked in DC? Where’s your favorite spot?

I have officially given up on the idea that a capsule wardrobe would be in any way right for me. I had three conversations this year that convinced me:

  1. The first time I met Julie she was wearing a shirt with a Jack-o-lantern on it. I don’t remember her exact words when we were discussing capsule wardrobes but it was something along the lines of, “I like to dress too weird for that.” Same girl, same. (I have literally the same shirt that she was wearing at the time.)
  2. I’ve run into stylist Marisa from DC Style Factory at a few events and I adore chatting with her, so I thought if anyone was to do a closet audit for me, she would be the one. While I may still need help with that at some point, she told me that a capsule wardrobe is not for me and that I have too much of a funky style for that. At the time, I was wearing a little mixed pattern situation. Nothing too crazy- prep with an edge.
  3. After explaining a capsule wardrobe to Kendall, his response simply was, “but you have a Popsicle dress.”

The man is not wrong. And he is actually really good at styling me. He likes me in grey and does not think ruffles are flattering. He’s not afraid to tell me when something doesn’t look right, but encourages me to have fun with my style. He did RULL GOOD this Christmas- a gorgeous Karl Lagerfeld coat, a great purse + wallet, a few graphic shirts (including the one in this post)… he just spoiled me. Let’s leave it at that. The present he was most excited to give me were my gold chucks. I could not wait to wear them, so I’m thrilled that my firm has casual week all week. If you’re looking to order a pair of your own, keep in mind that Converse usually is sold in men sizes. I wear a 6.5 women and 4 men (and kids?). I’m not sure at all how shoe size conversion works so you may want to try them on in person. I also linked 10 other metallic kicks under $100.
