Let me first say that there is literally nothing wrong with being basic at it’s most *ahem* basic level. I like what I like and if a trazillion other girls are also wearing riding boots and herringbone vests and sipping pumpkin spice lattes, so be it. My former roommate and I actually threw a Pumpkin Spice Friendship party. I kid you not. And everyone had a blast!

I found an old-ish Cosmo article that defends basic-ness and my favorite line is:

Liking something popular doesn’t make you lame. Discounting someone for having those same interests, however, does. Own your basic-ness, find your tribe…

(My tribe has a new uniform: my Sissy in law, Phi Sig Little, and I all just got this sweatshirt.)

But Fall has always been my favorite time of year- I hate being hot and love Halloween. I read once, I think in Cosmo too actually, that dressing in fall should actually be more fun because fall clothes have more substance than the dresses we throw on in the summer. I totally agree! I love sweaters and scarves and vests and textures and layers. I also look great in fall colors, tbh. Olive green, deep burgundies, amethyst purples. And with that, I bring you the basic essentials you should probably have for fall.

When I was little, my mom used to literally pack laundry baskets to take my sister and I to the beach for weeks at a time. As we got older, the kids got more involved in things at home (swim team mostly) and we went to the beach less and less. The upkeep of the house was too much for a place that, all told, was being used for maybe a couple of weeks out of the year. My family ultimately sold our little cottage on stilts by the sea that had been in the family for three generations- right before Hurricane Sandy hit. I don’t get to the beach nearly as much as I’d like to, but a girl can still dream about packing up and shipping off to the shore.

Strapless open-toed sandals

This summer, I’m going to find some stylish strapless open-toed sandals. The less strap, the better, to prevent blisters + hot feet. There are already hundreds of different designs in most stores.  I plan to look for something in a light brown color because that tends to go well with almost anything.

Designer swimsuits

I’m not one to spend a fortune on designer clothes if I can find cheaper alternatives. However, I rarely cut back when it comes to buying swimsuits. That is because even the designer brands are often affordable.  Fella Swim swimsuits online seem to fit the bill. Still, there are lots of other brands I’m going to consider. I just happen to think that it’s worth spending a little more when you’re buying something so delicate and revealing.

Essential beach accessories

No beach outfit is complete without a makeover and a few essential accessories. Firstly, I hate carrying things around, and so I’m always one to throw everything in a beach bag. It’s sensible to get something much larger than your handbag if you want it to hold everything you require.

I’m also prudent to invest in some sunglasses to protect your eyes. If you’re going to buy sunglasses from The Sunglasses Warehouse, you just need to find a style you enjoy. The same applies when you buy from any well-known retailer. Many ladies are opting for aviator-style glasses this summer, but you should choose whatever frames your face nicely.

At the end of the day, it’s possible to make substantial savings if you shop around. For that reason, it’s sensible to check online before you head out to the retail stores. Sometimes you’ll find better deals and offers using the internet. Whatever you decide to do, I hope you look amazing on the beach.

I’m sorry for the things I said when I got too hot. July is here and things are heating up-literally- for the summer. If it was completely up to me, I would spend all of July down the shore in a bathing suit drinking out of the hose at my beach house and living on local shellfish. However, I’m developing a shellfish allergy, that house is gone, and adults don’t get to go away for a whole month. WOMP.

My goal is to enjoy summer locally the best I can, despite hating the heat and being swamped as heck with work. July 3rd is very big for the Downings, so Kendall and I both took the day to sit my the pool, enjoy a few beverages, and take in the fireworks a day early at Montgomery Country Club with my family. For the 4th, we went with some of my best ladies and our menfolk to Red White and Fuego 2017. I’m still in a bit of recovery mode. Not sure of any other definite plans for July yet, but hand me a shady spot and a cold glass of rosé I should be fine.

the carolove july wish list

  1. You know what goes really well with rosé? Rose gold torti Forrest glasses.
  2. I’ve been really down on myself the past week or so, but luckily I have a world of amazing cheerleaders. Sometimes I just have to remember to take a step back and realize that my bad day is really nada in the scheme of things. Here ya go with the ban.do Cotton No Bad Days Graphic Sweatshirt.
  3. One of my bridesmaids sent me these Barbie Women’s Barbie Shoe Print Canvas Sneakers on Pinterest. Gimme.
  4.  It’s crazy to me that I used to hate on gingham so much because now I find myself looking for gingham. I like this unexpected embellished look on the Floerns Women’s Bell Sleeve Embroidered Tunic Dress.
  5. This pattern is kind of cray but I think this Allover Banana Print Buttoned Keyhole Top And Shorts set is super fun!
  6. Cold shoulder is how I do off the shoulder and the Tropical Print Open Shoulder Dress With Frill is perf for summer date nights.
  7. The stone in these Women’s Kendra Scott Dani Stone Drop Earrings is gorgeous~ so sparkly!
  8. The beads on this Women’s Panacea Beaded Statement Necklace look like candy and I’m kind of digging tribal-y inspired jewelry for summer.
  9. We could all stand to remember the words on this Women’s Mantraband Have Courage & Be Kind Engraved Cuff.
  10. I got pretty badly burnt on Monday… and now Kendall is gone on a business trip. Herbivore Botanicals After Sun Skin Soothing Aloe Mist would make it so I don’t have to try to rub aloe on my back right?
  11. On top of the burn, my face is feeling pretty dull and gross after sweating through my makeup and too much sun. I’m all about honey everything and would love to try the Farmacy Honey Potion Renewing Antioxidant Hydration Mask with Echinacea GreenEnvy.
  12. My blush is almost completely out. I like a bit of shimmer in mine so I’m down to try Too Faced Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush.

Sometimes I see outfits on my friends and immediately wish they were on me. My girl Amanda of Whistle & Wild looked absolutely adorable at a casual friends meet-up a couple of weeks ago, and I thought I’d take a stab at recreating the look of this outfit with different pieces (and maybe without the hat because my moon face looks even rounder in hats like that.) I love her graphic tee tied into a crop with the maxi skirt + statement necklace, but then I flew off the handle with the accessories I chose. As a shorty, I have to pair maxi anything with heels or  wedges, and the more rose gold the better, in my opinion.

This kind of look is so fun for summer brunch or rooftop drinks. While we were all about the red, white, and blue for Red White and Fuego at Mission, I would wear this for margaritas with my señoritas any day. Clearly I’m into bright colors + playful prints, and now that I don’t have my sorority advisor telling me to “take one accessory off before you leave the house,” I have thrown that advice completely out the window.

I really don’t like National Whatever Days… until one comes up that I can get behind. Today, apparently, is National Sunglasses Day. I have been a sunglasses junkie since middle school, but I’ve recently become way more conscious of health and maintenance for my body so I only wear sunnies with UV protection. According to the Vision Council, 75% of Americans are concerned about UV exposure, but only 31% wear sunglasses every time they go outside. Honestly, seeing those numbers, I just think for shame! I think that both of those numbers should be 100%.

While, yes, it is important to take care of your eyes on National Sunglasses Day and every day, you don’t need to break the bank protecting those peepers. Sunglass Warehouse is the best place to start looking for shades to suit you.

  • All of their sunglasses come with UV400 lenses, so you can protect your eyes and look good doing it.
  • Until the 30th, you can use the code SUNGLASS20 for 20% off site wide at Sunglass Warehouse
  • Order before 2pm Monday-Friday EDT and they’ll get your new sunglasses in the mail that same day.
  • From aviators to sports styles, they’ve got hundreds of sunglasses priced at $20 or less.
  • If you’re not 100% satisfied with your purchase, they’ll give you a full refund.

How fab is all that? They really do have hundreds of styles for men and women, but I picked out just a few of my faves to share + get you started.
