Having a bright and sparkly pair of pearly white teeth is often sought after. It is seen as a winning formula for a great smile. For many, it can also bee seen as a sign of being healthy. As we all prefer evenly spaced white teeth over crooked teeth that are stained yellow, right? Many people take risks in the quest for the perfect smile when there really is no need to. So if you want to get teeth that any Hollywood star would be proud of, then make sure that you follow these dos and don’ts.

Do See Your Dentist Regularly

It would be like wanting to get fit and never visiting a gym; you need to see a dentist in order to make sure that you have healthy teeth. They can help you with any issues that arise with your teeth or gums. They can also give your teeth a proper clean or safely whiten your teeth for you. There are at-home whitening treatments that you could try, but you could always consult with your dentist first. They might be able to recommend the best one for you and your teeth.

Go Smile A.m. & P.m. Luxury Toothpastes

Don’t Expect Toothpaste To Do It All For You

There are so many varieties of toothpaste out on the market these days. They all claim to whiten teeth. But in reality, with a toothpaste it is only short lived. If you are someone that drinks a lot of coffee or red wine, then it will limit how much a toothpaste can whiten your teeth. Toothpaste is basically for stain removal, rather than any extra whitening. So although you should be brushing regularly each day, don’t put all your hopes on a certain brand of toothpaste.

Do Consider a Treatment

If your teeth are in quite a bad way, then it could be worth considering a treatment for your teeth. You could think about getting your teeth professionally whitened. If your teeth are crooked or have moved since having braces, you could get braces again. Lots of adults are choosing to have clear braces later in life to straighten their teeth. You could also consider something like dental veneers if you think that would work for you.

Don’t Have Too Many Foods That Stain Teeth

If you are trying to get your teeth bright and white, then it can be rather counterproductive to be consuming lots of foods that will stain your teeth. Teeth are quite porous and absorb things fairly easily. This is especially true if you have damaged enamel and eat a lot of acidic or sugary foods. Think of a white plate or white carpet and what might cause a massive stain on them. The same would go for your teeth. So the best things to avoid are drinks like red wine, black coffee or tea, as well as sugary drinks. Smoking is renowned for making your teeth an off-white or yellow color so if you do smoke, it could be time to give it up.

It was our turn, ladies, earlier this week, but I actually really enjoy putting together gift guides for guys. It’s a little refreshing to do something different- plus I love shopping for other people and this year I get to shop for my own guy.

I’m also thinking that because I’ve never pulled a male in my office Secret Santa, this might be the year and I should be prepared. Like my gift guide/ stocking stuffers for her, these goodies for him are all under $25, so they could be perfect for those office gift exchanges with a spending cap!

Stockings are HUGE in the Downing household. Literally. My grandma knitted giant, personalized stockings for most of the family, and my mom has found a few places over the years that make similar ones for family members who don’t have the originals. They’re such a big part of our Christmas morning routine, too. Wake up, tea + coffee, stockings, breakfast, the rest of the presents, and then we’ve recently started a tradition of a Christmas day movie and sushi. I love it. My dad and I fight over the real estate in my mom’s stocking, and last year he “forgot” to sneak in the gifts I got her. Yea, right, Daddy! My mom is the stocking expert though- it’s usually a nice mix of practical and little fun gifts, leaving the stockings overflowing onto our brick hearth. I’ll be sure to take a picture of the absurdly idyllic scene this year because it honestly just warms my heart that we have such a strong tradition.

My department at work also has a really nice tradition- we do a Secret Santa for whoever wants to be involved and then we go out for a lunch together. The gifts are all supposed to be capped at $25, and people are supposed to fill out a wishlist to help coworkers who aren’t sure what to get. Like my family, the small gifts tend to be a mix of sweet an practical.

Disclaimer: this may or may not be my submission for the accounting department’s Secret Santa wishlist. hehehe

Happy Friday, y’all! I hope you stayed cool and dry this week with the hundred degree temps + flash floods. #yuck. Plans this weekend include my movie night at Crumbs & Whiskers and a Bubbles & Bloggers brunch organized by the lovely Dani!

Remember a couple years ago when Mac had a Barbie line? At the time the was more than I wanted to spend, so forget about now that it’s collectors’ item status. But Barbie girls rejoice! Walgreens has a mini-collection with items under $10!

I am so stoked about my upcoming road trip! I have always wanted to go to Savannah so Kendall and I are stopping there on our way back from Alabama/ Mississippi. I’d love to check out the 7 wonders, but if anyone has any Savannah travel tips I’d love to know!

OK- so I’ve been slowly turning on my friends to lavender lattes, but how do you you feel about lavender toothpaste? Or jasmine toothpaste for that matter?

For whatever reason, the flooding in Lousiana is not getting the attention that Katrina did. When Katrina hit, I was going to a school that was very heavily philanthropy based. We sent trucks of supplies and donations to Louisiana and it was great to tangibly work on that. Not having the base of St. Andrew’s at my disposal, I did a quick search about what I could do for the flood relief. I found this great list of ways you can help here, and I encourage you to share.

Have an amazing weekend!
