Last weekend, Bubbles & Bloggers had our July meetup- a shopping tour with Shop The City (more on that in a later post) that ended with the last Whistle & Wild popup before founder Amanda scoots down to Texas in a move that has been a long time coming. While I’m sad to see my friend go, I am SO excited for her journey. You may remember this, but Sarah and I modeled her clothes to help launch Whistle & Wild back late last summer, and the following of Amanda’s online boutique has grown exponentially and nation-wide. There is no question that Amanda is one bad boss and she’ll do great things!

This popup had a little somethin’somethin’ extra though! Marisa was there to help style summer Whistle & Wild pieces for fall. I was so inspired that I wanted to share with my readers some of the great ideas Marisa gave to help transition their own wardrobes. The best part is that I found the pieces I was missing at the #NSale and can share those with you too! These are just a couple of pieces we looked at to move from summer into fall. Make sure you check out everything Whistle & Wild has to offer!

Although the booties that Marisa showed us with this outfit had a little more of a heel, I love love love the perforated look on this Tom’s booties. Put those toes away once the temps drop, ad some sleeves to the slip dress with soft cotton underneath, and add burgundy to the blush to make a great fall outfit!

“Gingham is summer through and through.” This is a gingham rule that I’ve already talked about breaking myself. While Marisa said that leather is still a bit much for early fall, olive utility/ military style jackets are universally flattering. Add a riding boot with a low heel for just a little bit of height. I actually got these exact boots for myself after hearing how long my legs looked with just a bit of heel. At the risk of looking too matchy matchy, I kind of love it with the blue bag too! And I think the boots make it a day or night outfit.

I think the hardest part about dressing in the summer is like… what exactly do I wear to work? My off-duty look is my Jacks with an easy dress that may or may not be too short for the office, but during the week I find myself grabbing one of the same 5 law-firm appropriate frocks I have hanging in my closet. I am pretty lucky that my firm is lax about the dress code so I can get away with a lot- like this dress probably wouldn’t fly for a lot of office jobs- but I’m just finding myself a little bored with my work clothes. That fresh blue made me feel awesome, so I’m thinking of incorporating more colors into my summer work wardrobe.

This might come from my general antsy-ness and discontent in the summertime, but regardless, I’m looking for inspiration for my closet. In the interest of being universally appealing, I’m sticking to rules of work wear that I don’t usually follow myself- close-toed shoes, no sleeveless blouses.

Keep in mind, this is for work wear and not necessarily interview wear. I stumbled across an old District Sparkle post, and I think her rules for interview attire ring pretty true!

… or watermelon. It’s funny- certain foods are only for certain times of the year. Watermelon is a summer-only food in my book. A summer-only flavor, even. I’m hoping that Mission brings back their watermelon margs for the 4th of July, but you’d never catch me drinking one in say, October. I have memories from my brief time with Girl Scouts of sitting in our leader’s backyard spitting seeds and laughing and enjoying the heat with a refreshing treat. It’s just fresh and light and, to me, not overly sweet. Kendall actually went grocery shopping solo and brought me back watermelon Perrier and it is SO GOOD. *she says as she sips it while writing this blog post*

Because watermelon is my flavor of summer, I also consider it to be a pattern or motif of summer. I’ve feature a lot of watermelon shizzz on the blog before, but I wanted to present it all in one place, plus some bonus pieces that I’ve found since.

Getting to dress up in a theme is one of my favorite things to do, and the 4th of July is one of the best holidays for that. In DC, it’s already heating up and I’m trying to figure out how to wear as little as possible while still representing that red, white, and blue. I’m especially excited that I get to celebrate with my army guy since he’ll have returned to me. (EEK! He’ll be home Friday/ Saturday and I CANNOT WAIT!)

While his outfit is probably consisting of either this shirt or these shorts I picked up for him the last time he was away, I haven’t figured mine out. I kind of want to wear this dress or this one, but I can’t find either. I’m starting to think there’s a troll in my closet eating my clothes- either that or there’s a purple bin I haven’t touched since I moved in. REGARDLESS- what is this patriotic princess to do?

If you’re trying to figure out an insta-worthy outfit on a budget, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite pieces under $50 to help get you started. I can’t wait to see all that red, white, and blue!

Planning a girls weekend away, whether it’s for a hen do or just any excuse to get away and blow off some steam, is not always easy and it can sometimes feel like a little bit of a logistical headache. However planning for a great weekend, that everyone will enjoy without any hiccups along the way is all in the detail, so here is our essential survival kit to ensure a great time is had by all.

Overnight Bag Monogrammed Weekend Tote

It’s All In The Detail

Forward thinking and careful planning will mean that you are prepared for every eventuality on your trip away. If you are going to be doing a lot of city exploring on foot, or countryside trekking then make sure you are well prepared with maps and blister bandages. There’s nothing that brings the mood of a weekend down than sore feet, getting lost and essentially, moaning girls. So thinking ahead of all the little necessary details will make sure your group stay cheerful and positive.

It’s All In The Planning

Planning the weekend is also really important. Obviously you don’t want to have every hour of every day organized down to military precision but you should at least have a vague idea of what you all want to do when you arrive at your weekend getaway destination. Talk to all the girls in your group about what everyone fancies doing and then start thinking about how you can fit all those things into your weekend. If you are wanting to create an organised schedule make sure you always allocate sections of each day where nothing is organized so that there is always free time for people to go off and do whatever they want for a couple of hours here and there

Have a look at any interesting festivals, concerts and events that may be happening in the place that you’re going to, to see if there’s anything unique that you can go and see and get involved in. And don’t get discouraged if plans fail- I was at a bachelorette weekend when one girl lost her ID. Rather than sulk about having to change plans when we couldn’t go to a bar, we went out for a crab feast instead and had a BLAST.

Fighting Off Those Inevitable Hangovers

We’ve all been there. Getting a little overly excited on the first night and overdoing it. The rest of the weekend can then be a bit of a washout with the group feeling groggy, tired and hungover. There are however some tricks to avoid this, other than, well, not getting carried and drinking so much.

Firstly a Vitamin C, or effervescent tablet is a great morning booster for tired and sluggish girls, so popping a tube of these into your weekend bag is definitely a good idea. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure, so why not pack a hangover recovery capsule solution to help fight off those dreaded hangover.

Hangover capsules work by neutralizing your body’s reaction to the major toxins in alcohol, by stimulated the production of the enzyme ADH and ALDH in your liver. Just popping one of these FDA approved capsules with your first alcoholic drink can radically reduce hangovers the next day, so are definitely worth considering adding to your packing list.
