If you’ve been reading my blog for a long time, you already know that stockings are a big deal in my family. We don’t treat them like an afterthought. Stockings are an event. We grew up with stockings that felt thoughtful and personal, packed with little luxuries and tiny surprises that felt just as exciting as whatever might be under the tree. It became a tradition that we still take seriously, and honestly it’s one of my favorite holiday rituals we have.

We also have our own “stocking system” that has basically become family law. There are true stocking stuffers and then there are what we call “Santa Gifts.” Santa Gifts are the slightly bigger, slightly more special items that either don’t really fit in the stocking or would be ridiculous to wrap. They still get placed near or around the stocking, but they count as part of the stocking experience. They’re usually something cozy, indulgent, or just fun. A scented lotion someone’s been eyeing. A cute shower upgrade they wouldn’t buy themselves. A hair oil that feels extra fancy. And they are always unwrapped, because the vibe is very: Santa just dropped it off like that.

Chocolate in my stocking

Really, since I’ve been blogging, I have mentioned that Christmas stockings are a huge part of my family’s Christmas traditions. My mom especially is the best at picking the cutest stocking stuffers, and opening them is always the first thing we do Christmas morning, once we have our coffee and tea. You might be like, Caroline, it’s not even Halloween! And you would be correct. However, two things:

When I started working on this chocolate-themed post, I got part of a very dumb Christmas song stuck in my head. I looked but couldn’t find it on Spotify, so I started to worry that it didn’t actually exist. I found one (1) awful youtube video of preschoolers performing it, so I guess I didn’t make it up. Gift Guide: A Rainbow Connection

I have a best guy friend who gets me. Justin and I actually met on Twitter and our first time meeting in person was to take a road trip from WV to Ohio to see a concert in the parking lot of an abandoned mall. The rest was history. We’ve met eachothers’ parents, we’ve visited eachothers’ states (I still need to make it to Minnesota now that he’s moved), I send him dinosour shirts for Christmas, and he sends me rainbow roses on my birthday.

He also has a seven-year-old neice that likes the same stuff I do. We were texting back and forth about the Lele x Lisa Frank collection that’s about to drop and he mentioned that Sabrina would love it. That drop is likely to be extremely pricey, like I’m guessing ~$180 for a headband and ~$150 for the earrings. But since Sabrina and I have the same aesthetic of glitter, unicorns, princesses, and rainbows, I told him I’d put together a wallet and age appropriate gift guide for him. So this may be a little different than my usual content… but probably not that different. Just smaller.

Natural rubber. The mixture being used is 60-40 for most high-end wellies. This lends it to be flexible, warm and able to withstand hot and cold.
Belt and calf. The modern wellies are no longer straight and tall. They are curved at the calf for a better fit and the belt on the side makes it possible to wear them tighter.

If you have a special man in your life, a nice peacoat would be a great gift in winter. Worn by Scottish sailors, the peacoat is for the man under 40 and can be worn both in town and in the country. This gives your neck protection from the wind and acts as a deflecting design.

A top coat is not as formal as an overcoat or greatcoat, but it’s in the middle. It’s a single-breasted woolen coat, with three buttons and slide pockets. It’s great for any man that wants to have a casual but formal coat that will keep the upper leg warm.

Holiday gift guide for mom

I should probably preface this that I’m making this gift guide with my mom in mind. In fact, while I was working on this post over the weekend, she was in and out of my “office” (Candace’s room) switching her closets, and stopped to say, “Oooh! Cute jammies!”

While none of these things, except for her annual snowflake, are her actual Christmas presents from me this year (she reads my blog, hey mommy!) this list is very much based on her wish list and Christmases past. In our house, you can never go wrong with a piney candle or cozy accessories for the holidays. And, seriously, it wouldn’t be Christmas without the annual mini snowflake from Swarovski. That’s been a tradition at least fifteen years running.

Small biz wish list

Every time I make a wish list, I feel like I need to add the disclaimer that I don’t need or want for anything. I really don’t! The one thing I did need, a new Mac, is something I’ll be getting for Christmas and that is above and beyond.

HOW EV VER, I’ve been thinking about my own shopping habits for this Christmas. We’re not doing Black Friday the way we normally do this year, and I’m so glad. I mean, there’s a usual excitement of heading to Columbia Mall with my mom and Auntie Steph, but I’m normally over the crowds three hours in – ON A GOOD YEAR. And this year it’s really not worth the risk being around all those strangers.

Most of my shopping is done already done, a lot of it from The Family Room, a local favorite of mine. I’ve snagged a couple things from Amazon, but in the interest of encouraging other folks to shop small, I thought I’d share some of my favorite things I’ve seen from makers and small shops – both local and across the country.
