Recently, some friends and I were talking about perfumes and signature scents. I kind of switch up what perfume I’m wearing for the type of event I’m going to and the seasons, but I may have stumbled on what should be my signature scent based on the compliments I got last weekend.

While I would normally say that my ideal scent is a mix of fresh fruits and gourmond, Strawberry Moon is really not sweet at all, but spicy with just a hint of citrus:

This South Beach scent is inspired by the goodtime hotel’s retro swim club. With jasmine, bright citrus, and sun-tanned leather, this limited-edition fragrance brings the lively Miami social scene to you. It honestly does have staying power as well, something I’ve been a bit dissapointed in with some perfumes I’ve picked up recently that I love otherwise. I had been thinking of this as a summer scent, but I think the leather and pepper make it not only unisex, but year round. The Stella & Dot difference

It’s not a secret that I absolutely love Stella & Dot (you can look back here and see how much I talk about them) but I’m not super fond of Multi Level Marketing in general. They often seem like get-rich-quick schemes that, in reality, do anything but for those who get involved. Women selling LuLaRoe, for example were ‘told “to borrow money … take out credit cards, and some were even asked to sell their breast milk …” in order to purchase more inventory.”‘

That’s pretty shady stuff, and I have never gotten that vibe from Stella & Dot, even though they’re also have a multi level marketing structure. A company using the MLM structure “is a sales system wherein the salesperson receives a commission on his own sales and a smaller commission on the sales from each person he has enrolled to also be a salesperson.”

The difference between Stella & Dot and other MLMs comes with the fact that their focus is on their products, not recruitment. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it but after reading this post from The Opportunity Scout, it finally clicked. MLM is not necessarily a dirty word- but pyramid schemes are!

This company gets [a high] rating because among all the MLM companies I have reviewed, they are one of the few that operate like a real company.

This is a fashion company that, like Asos and Boohoo, sells real products, ships to normal customers, has a return & refund policy and also has an affiliate program. The difference between Stella and Dot and the other companies is that they offer people who are interested the opportunity to become stylists themselves.

My friend Erica is my stylist, and her selling style focuses on letting her customers know about special sales, new products, and trending looks. I love that because I’m perfectly content being a customer and affiliate, thank you very much!

I found another Brandless product that I LOVE! The Grapefruit Facial Scrub is like getting a facial every day. Kendall even noticed how clear my skin is! (Just don’t get in in your eyes because that was a PAIN. Literally.)

Raise your hand if you were SO excited for Blair Eadie’s collection with Halogen at Nordstrom. I was so psyched, specifically for the Tiered Tulle Midi Skirt. Unfortunately, it was returned immediately. I looked ridiculous. I still so respect the collection for being size inclusive and affordable, so definitely check it out!

It’s not necessarily that easy, though, and especially not if you’ve been friends for a while and already gone through the most popular gift options.

Here is a handful of slightly more unusual gifts for your best friend so that you can rest assured you’ve found something she’s going to love. That way, you’re also raising the standard for what she feels like she should get for your birthday, you know.

A part of the gift is, of course, that you get to spend time together and relax without having to think about anything than catching up and chatting. If you send her off alone, it’s not really the same kind of gift.

If you’re not sure about what she would enjoy at the spa, you can always fish around a bit before booking the appointment – or just get the standard deal such as a massage and a facial.

Concert tickets

Having fun together is a part of what makes your friendship so great – and, if you have the same taste in music, you should definitely treat her to concert tickets. This depends on the artists that plan on visiting your city, though, and if there are no big headlines coming up in the next couple of weeks, you may want to consider heading off to another city.

Consider what works for you and your budget, and try to find something that you know she will enjoy. There’s little point in buying concert tickets to a show she’s not interested in as you won’t really be able to just hang out and enjoy each other’s company in the middle of all the music.

As long as you give her as much of your time as possible, she will definitely be happy for anything you give her.

Happy Friday!

This week has gone surprisingly fast considering I was barely at work the past couple of weeks. This weekend, Kendall and I are meeting my parents for a wine tasting at Mt. Vernon with my mom’s JHU alumni group. Sunday, I’m heading home to Olney for brunch at Cava Mezze to celebrate my friend Erica’s birthday. What are you up to?

I went a little HAM when I was down the shore getting some goodies for fall. Not as crazy as I’ve gone in the past but I did find some cute things. I did REALLY well at the flee market… I actually found Too Faced Rainbow Strobe Rainbow Effect Highlighter for $12! (And a Stephen King book for $3! I can’t wait to read Under The Dome!)

This may sound silly but I was researching perfumes and read that Diamonds and Rubies by Elizabeth Taylor was a good dupe for SUN MOON STARS by Karl Lagerfeld. The latter is a fave that has been discontinued and now sold for around $300, so an alternative for under $20 doesn’t sound so bad!

I’ve heard of Synesthesia before (not that I knew the name for it), but this essay explaining what it’s like to live with it opened my eyes to the fact that there are many different variations of the condition. Do you taste words? Or associate letters and numbers with very specific colors? I took a little questionnaire and I may have a touch of it myself because of the way my mind organizes months into locations… if that makes sense.

I loved this post about “buying into the hype” from Helen because it’s so true! Actually, the same thing happened to me with a leopard skirt I loved on Dana… I chased it down, waited for it to go on sale, but unlike Helen was SO disappointed in how it fit on me.

Saturday shopping: statement necklaces

You know how sometimes you can see something and it sticks with you for one reason or another? I used to religiously keep up with Meaghan and she referred to statement necklaces as behemoths in this post. Actually, now that I think about it, I started wearing them because of her too. If you’ve been following this blog long enough, you know she was one of the bloggers who really inspired me to start my own. But this post is not about that.

It’s about those behemoths. I freakin’ love statement necklaces. I mention them + wear them quite a bit. I think if I had to pick one access for the rest of my life statement necklaces would be it. This is due, in large part to their ability to complete an outfit in one second. As I write this post, I’m wearing a black t-shirt dress and a neon orange + crystal statement necklace gifted to me by Dani when she didn’t want to toss it but didn’t want it. It’s one of my fave.

And the thing is, you really don’t have to spend a lot on them either. For something that ties together and elevates outfits to easily, you can get them so cheap! Novelty

The word novelty is one I associate with kitsch, pop-culture, and nostalgia. Novelty handbags shaped like strawberries and grapefruit and pumpkin spice lattes are THE BEST and help me make my statement: I don’t like to be boring.

But there’s a darker side of novelty- at least for me. I was a novelty for a little bit to a certain crowd. Pre-Kendall, I really thought I’d end up with a guy mirroring the (majority of) the guys I went to high school with. I confused and intrigued these guys who I thought I should be dating.

I never quite got the preppy thing right, pairing sweet lace dresses with my navy Vans and the denim jacket I designed rather than espadrilles and cardigans… maybe a giant bow in my hair. These guys found me amusing would actually tell me as much. “I can’t figure you out,” was kind of a theme. I was a little wild but just tame enough that it would have been fine for me to meet the family. But I was a novelty.

Enter my Kendall. He had no expectation of me, but wanted (and still wants) to know everything about me. He embraces my quirks and my love of color, patterns, and glitter. Where my high school boyfriend was embarrassed of one particular tutu/ rainbow boot combo, Kendall told me I should never have a capsule wardrobe “because of your popsicle dress.” He got me a boombox purse for Christmas. The Reptar clutch in this post was a random Friday surprise.

The dress I wore to brunch last weekend with Dani was another feelin’ myself moment. I wore it twice in one week because it makes me feel AMAZING. That is how clothes should make you feel. I got it during the #NSALE and just got it in purple. If it comes back in black, I’ll get that one too.

Again, my point is not that I’m better than the preppy guys I dated, or like, anyone, for that matter. I’m saying, to thine own self be true. Love yourself, be yourself, and only be with those who love you being yourself.
