I love how style is cyclical. It isn’t just fashion but style for the home as well. One home style that’s making a splash right now is rattan. Full disclosure, I actually had to look up the difference between rattan and wicker. Rattan is a type of wood with a vertical grain that is often used to make woven furniture items. An item made with a particular weaving style — whatever material is used — is called wicker.
Rattan seemed to be big when I was growing up. Our beach house living room had a rattan couch, loveseat, and chaise. My own bedroom was all-white rattan- from the bedside tables to the dresser. We had at least one rattan chair in the basement (that I think has since been replaced with another) and my mom has a headboard that she painted herself. It’s definitely a throwback for me- but to the 90s rather than the 70s.
Maybe it’s because of the aforementioned beach house, but rattan also gives me summer/ beachy vibes. It just seems so light and fresh, especially matched with blues, whites, and soft neutrals. What do you think of this style hitting the scene (again)? Would you add a piece here and there or go for a full room of it?
