If you are a lover of beauty magazines, websites or blogs, you probably see one phrase in particular popping up a lot of the time: ‘glowing’. In fact, it has even wormed its way into the mainstream media, with regular magazines and newspapers snapping a good-looking celeb and captioning the photo ‘she’s simply glowing!’. So what exactly does this word mean? Well, it essentially boils down to the recipient of the term looking exceptionally healthy and happy – as though they take good care of themselves. It isn’t particularly related to style or fashion – or even makeup, really. It is more to do with a natural look – that ‘inner glow’, if you will. Felt yourself looking a bit on the drab side lately? Here are some ways you can easily ‘glow up’.

Take good care of your skin
Take a moment to examine your skincare routine. If it’s pretty much non-existent at the moment, this is where you could be going wrong. In your 20s, your skin is likely to be supple and pretty much wrinkle-free. You could even still be experiencing some symptoms of teenage skin, such as excess oil and acne. But unfortunately, reality does hit at some point, and soon your skin may lose its youthful appearance. As this is one of the keys to ‘glowing skin’, it is best to start an exfoliating/moisturizing routine sooner rather than later. Serum in particular is a great product for keeping skin soft and supple – just remember not to go too over the top with it, especially if you have oily skin. A little bit goes a long way. If, when you get older you decide that your skin is still lacking it’s mojo, you could always look into the possibility of having a facelift too.

Watch your diet
There is absolutely no rule that says that in order to look glowing, you have to exercise like crazy and be stick thin. Anyone of any shape can have that glowing look that shows they have been providing their body and mind with only good stuff. With that in mind, there’s nothing wrong with the occasional treat – after all, we’d all be pretty miserable without pizza, right?! But certain nuts, fruits and proteins can all play an integral role in keeping your skin, hair and eyes bright and shiny – thus giving you that dreamy healthy glow. Too much processed food and sugary soda can easily play havoc with your appearance as well as your general health, so just be mindful of what you are putting into your body.

Use makeup to your advantage
Even though skincare, hair care and general health are the best ways to make you look glowing, a little touch of makeup can really complete the look. Use it lightly – too much makeup can look ‘caked on’ and can ruin the whole effect, as well as clogging up your skin. Use a sheer foundation – even a tinted moisturizer, in fact – and give yourself a light dusting of bronzer if you are a little on the pale side. Investing in a good highlighter and learning how to use it will also transform your look; it reflects the light naturally, giving you a fresh, dewy look.
