I think we can all agree that Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” was one of the most iconic bops of the 90s. We didn’t even a have a CD player  in our cars yet, but the cassette tape was on repeat in the Honda my poor au pair drove us around in and if it wasn’t there, it was in my purple karaoke boombox.

I was pretty young when it it came out, eight, to be precise, so I didn’t quite get all of the lyrics but I do remember an adult (probably my mom) mentioning how clever it was that they said “life in plastic” as a double reference to Barbie literally being plastic, and using “plastic” aka credit cards for the shopaholic life that was oh-so-popular in the 90s a la “Clueless”. What a time to be alive!

I think the some of the more fun aspects of 90s and 2000s fashion have been coming back with a vengeance. Plastic is one of them. You probably know if you’re reading this that I am obsessed with nostalgia and novelty, so fun punchy accessorize are right up my alley. I mean, I did plan a Barbie brunch a while back, too, complete with my own street style Barbie look!
