When I was little, my favorite movies were Look Who’s Talking and Look Who’s Talking, Too. Part of the reason for this, even in toddler-hood, was that I was obsessed with Mollie’s apartment. It looked to me like a playground you could live in with neons and pastels and funky geometric prints and silhouettes. Unfortunately, there are, like, zero good pictures that will show you what I’m talking about but another example is DJ’s bed from Full House.
I always thought of this style as kind of an extension of mid-century modern with a dash of 30s deco, but one lazy Saturday, I actually did some research into 80s interiors and found that the elements that I loved the most came from a collaborative of Italian designers who formed The Memphis Group. They were basically rebelling against stark designs of the time and created some of the iconic themes we associate with the 80s now.
When I think 80s interior design, I think pastels, bright colors, playful shapes, geometric furniture, and glass blocks. As with all trends, 80s interiors are coming back, supposedly in a more toned down way… but where’s the fun in that? I have a bright orange carpet in our living room- I am not about subtle. And if Karl Lagerfeld is/ was a fan, these playful pieces must be chic, right?
I wonder if Kendall will let me turn our future house into a playground? Some other glorious examples can be found here, but check out the pieces I pulled for you to 80s-ify your own space.
