I used to think that I had to carry everything with me at all times. Giant purses were the way to go, and at one point in my life, that made sense. When I was working at Pier 1 and going to GW’s Institute for Documentary Filmmaking, I lived out of my Reptar backpack or a giant tote, depending on what my plans were.
At any given time, I had my regular planner, my film school planner, a notebook, assignments for school, at least one change of clothes, a water bottle, a box of granola bars, a toothbrush, face wipes… I don’t even think that covers it. I spent a lot of time crashing on couches and air mattresses and changing into my work clothes in my car. I was running on cold brew, adrenaline, Roti, and cheap wine. It was fun, it was exhausting, it was chaos.
I still, to a point, thrive on chaos, but it’s a more structured chaos. My work bag is still stuffed with probably more than I need, but I actually have a work life balance where, once upon a time, I had none. I definitely pair down for my weekend baggage, leaving the giant bags at home and preferring a small purse with one (1) lip gloss, a wallet, my phone, and maybe a portable charger if I’m going to an event where I know we’ll be taking lots of pictures.
I think clutch bags are great accessories for when you’re going somewhere with one location- I wouldn’t take one for a day of shopping, but definitely to brunch or a wedding. As someone who never knows what to do with her hands/ arms in pictures, they give me something to hold. And they’re little pieces that can make a big statement. You’re also not lugging around anything you don’t really need.
