Jewelry is the perfect accessory for giving your outfit that extra sparkle of energy. If you’re eager to wear more bling or simply need some pointers on how to get the best out of your jewellery collection, why not try adopting some of these jewellery-wearing tricks?

Match the occasion

Certain types of jewellery are better suited to specific occasions. This important to understand so that you don’t go overly subtle or overly blingy.

When it comes to workplaces, many have strict rules when it comes to jewellery – some may not allow any jewellery if it’s a health and safety risk. In most cases, you’re best toning your jewellery down to basic metal items. Gaudy jewellery could be distracting and unprofessional – you should certainly avoid things that rattle such as armfuls of bracelets.

Casual parties and social occasions are better for flaunting those novelty pieces of jewellery. Formal social occasions are good times to go blingy with silver and gold, whilst more casual social occasions could be better for beads, leather and non-precious metals. As for going on a date, wear whatever you like – this is a great time to reflect your personality, whether its showy or subtle.

Color coordinate stones

Precious stones and pendants are great for bringing pops of colors to your outfit. They can also be used to bring out natural features or complement make-up.

When it comes to color coordinating jewellery with clothing, you’re best contrasting rather than using the same colour. For example, if you’re wearing a purple dress, use a topaz necklace pendant to accentuate the purple.

As for bringing out natural features, using contrasting colors can also work. If you want to bring out the red in your hair, use green earrings to contrast them. The exception is eye colors in which you’re best matching jewellery based on color – if you’ve got green eyes, a green gemstone could help to draw attention to this.

Meanwhile when it comes to complementing makeup, you may similarly want to contrast. For example, when it comes to bring out red lipstick or red fingernail polish, try using green earring and a green beaded bracelet.

Silver Snake Bracelet

Mix your metals

In times gone by, mixing different colored metal was a big no-no – you stuck to all gold or all silver. However, more recently people have been breaking this rule. In fact, having all of the same of metal can now come across overly matchy-matchy.

Mixing metals should be done with caution – you’re best stacking metals such as try multiple bracelets of different colors or multiple necklaces of different metal colors. Try to keep the ratio 50/50 when it comes to golden and white jewellery, this can help to make it look like you’ve done it purposely.

Lavender Ice Necklace

Have a statement piece

Statement pieces are items of jewellery that make the biggest impression. They’re often the quirkiest or the showiest pieces. Unless you’re going for a boho chic vibe, you’re best having no more than one statement piece of jewellery. In other words, opt for a chunky bracelet but don’t try to pair this with large dangly earrings otherwise the two items of jewellery will feel as if they’re competing for one another.

There are all kinds of ways to make a statement with jewellery. You could opt for something oversized but keep everything else thin and subtle. For example, if you’re going to wear a large pendant necklace, try contrasting it with more basic bracelets or stud earrings.

A statement piece could also be something rare such as a red diamond pendant. What is a red diamond? These gems have all the sparkle of a diamond but have a reddish tone making them more unique. Alternatively, you could try wearing some bespoke jewellery such as a hand-made necklace or an engraved bracelet.

A statement piece could also be a conversation starter that helps relate to your personality. It could be a birthstone or pedant related to your favorite animal. These could be great for social occasions when you’re meeting lots of new people.

Choose the right necklace length

Necklaces can help to accentuate your neck, but you should be careful of going too long or too short and having the opposite effect. Your body shape and the rest of the clothing you’re wearing can all be factors to consider when pulling of the right length.

When it comes to long necklaces, these are often best worn with flowing clothes – together they can create an elegant look. Ideally long necklaces shouldn’t hang any further than beyond your bust. If you’re not tall or don’t have a long figure, you could find that long necklaces hang too far down. In most cases, long necklaces are for formal occasions such as weddings and business events – however you could pair one with plunging neckline on a party dress if you’re feeling more daring.

As for short collar necklaces and chokers, these can sometimes be better with more tight-fitting clothes, although they can sometimes help to contrast looser clothing too. Such necklaces are often better for people with longer necks. You don’t want to wear a choker if you have a wide neck as it will simply draw emphasis to the width of your neck.

As for mid-length princess and matinee necklaces, these can often be more flexible and can be worn with most clothing at most occasions. Shorter women may find that these necklaces hang lower and could use them as an alternative to longer necklaces, whilst taller women may find that they hang shorter and could be used as a short necklace instead.

Luxe Wing Crystal Earrings

Choose earrings that frame your face

Choosing the right pair of earrings may also depend on other factors – namely the shape of your face. Matching the right pair of earrings to your face shape can help to frame your face correctly.

For example, if you’ve got a round face, you could be better off choosing long dangling pendants. These can help to elongate your face – studs or circular pendants may highlight its roundness.

When it comes to longer faces meanwhile, you may want to try studs or small earrings that help to shorten your face and make it rounder. Long pendants could elongate your face further, so these are best avoided.

There are other face shapes to consider too such as oval shaped faces and heart shaped faces in which you can use earrings above the chin to help widen your mouth out. Ultimately, you’re best trying out different shapes to see what works for you.
