My family is firmly in the “no Christmas decor until after Thanksgiving” camp. The first Monday in December, if I’m remembering this correctly, my mom hosts a dinner at her home for the Monday Mission Society (her church group) where she makes a couple hearty soups in the crock pots and everyone else brings a salad, bread, or dessert. The house is always decorated for that dinner, and so cozy.
There are two big trees. The huge one in the foyer is a rainbow collection of mostly Christopher Radkco ornaments. This tree has evolved over the years. It used to be mostly wooden ornaments from my mom’s childhood and handmade popcorn garland. The smaller tree in the family room is all crystal, silver, and white lights. Every year, I get my mom the annual LITTLE STAR ORNAMENT from Swarovski.
There are a bunch of smaller trees all over the house, as well as glass bowls filled with ornaments, wreaths in just about every room, and enough pine scented candles to help us forget that the entire family is allergic to real Christmas trees.
My favorite part of my mom’s holiday decorating is the mantle in the family room. She puts up garland, string lights, candles, and Christmas music boxes we’ve collected over the years. My favorite is this bright plastic one with a train going through a tunnel in a mountain. When we spent a few Christmases away from home after Candace died, I’d bring that with me. And the stockings that my grandma hand-knit for our family hang by the chimney with care. I love it.
Every family had a different style of holiday decorating and I love it. When I worked at Pier 1, we called different themes “stories” and I was always excited to see what was new. I think once I have my own home, my “story” will feel something like a cozy Christmas cabin. I actually collect Christmas cars and where my mom has a crystal tree, I already have enough car ornaments to start a car tree.
Be on the lookout for these holiday decoration trends. Do you stick to one theme, or are you eclectic?
Visions of Sugar
One of my favorite stories at Pier One always involved a peppermint motif.

Seasonal stained glass
Stained glass is an awesome addition to a season where candles and twinkle lights are everywhere.

Buffalo Plaid
The best thing about buffalo plaid is that it isn’t strictly Christmas and can hang out all winter.

Christmas Cars
Ok, this one might not be a trend as much as I just LOVE me a good Christmas car.

Pink Christmas
I’m usually not one for ONE color for the holidays, but if I had to pick, I’d go for unexpected pastel pink.
