Winter weather can be harsh and unpredictable which can cause havoc with our lips. Our usually silky smooth lips can get dried out, chapped and cracked due to the extreme weather conditions. This can leave us feeling self-conscious and less likely to show off our picture perfect smiles. But instead of just accepting the damage the cold and wind can do to your lips, there are things you can do to take care of them. Here are a couple of ways you can keep your lips velvety soft throughout the winter months.

Use an SPF lip balm
It’s might seem silly to wear SPF products in the winter, but even when the sun is hidden by clouds, it can cause damage to our skin and lips. Using a moisturising replenishing lip balm with SPF protection will ensure that your lips won’t get damaged by the Sun’s rays. It will also protect the delicate skin on your lips from being chapped by cold, harsh winds, which can cause painful cracking and splitting. If your lips are already damaged by the weather, a moisturising lip balm can help to keep them hydrated and reduce peeling and irritation. Therefore allowing your lips to heal quicker and become less painful.
Always check that your lip balm product has a high SPF rating and moisturising properties before you buy to get the best product possible.
Have plenty of fluids
The best way to protect your lips during the winter is ensuring that you include plenty of fluids within your diet. Drinking plenty of water each day will keep your lips soft and moisturised and also improve the appearance of your skin, hair and teeth too. Try to avoid drinking too much alcohol or caffeine as they can make you dehydrated and dry out your lips. As well as drinking plenty of fluids you can also eat hydrating food too. Fruits that contain water such as watermelon and pineapple are ideal for boosting your fluid intake. Also, eat plenty of vegetable such as tomatoes, peppers and spinach that also have a high water content. These will make you feel healthier and prevent your lips from chapping and getting dried out.
Exfoliate your lips regularly
Just like our skin, our lips need to be exfoliated to keep them looking healthy. Makeup, food and drink can damage our lips leaving them feeling dry and scaly. Exfoliating your lips gently with a washcloth or a toothbrush every day will get rid of loose skin and reduce peeling. Just ensure that you don’t scrub your lips or pull at the skin with your fingers. This can cause bleeding and encourage scabs to form on your lips. This is naturally something you want to avoid. Wait for at least half an hour before putting on any lip gloss or lipstick to allow your lips to start repairing themselves.
Dry and cracked lips are not fun but they can be treated and prevented. With these tips, you’ll have soft and kissable lips all winter long.
