This year, I will actually be in Mississippi for Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 14th for those of you who need to plan!). Kendall is about to be gone for a month so we’re driving down together, going to New Orleans with his sister and her fiance, then I’m flying back up to DC that Monday. I was actually so upset to have to tell my mom that I would be missing it, but in true Downing family fashion, she shrugged it off and agreed we could celebrate the following weekend.
I’m really close with my mom, and I cherish the time we get to spend together the two of us now that I’ve really flown the coop. She’s coming to the Strong Women in Fashion show, and actually bringing her teammates from work along! She always has my back but will certainly tell me how it is (no naked cakes for the wedding, certain cuts of clothes are not flattering on me, and stop making that face).
I’m super excited for her as she now has 30 something days of this school year left and then gets to retire after teaching for 40 years! (40? Did I get that right Mommy?) Not that she won’t keep busy, but now she has a chance to travel to warmer climates when she wants and not have to worry about getting a sub. In fact, she’ll probably sub herself when she starts missing the classroom! I’m so proud of her and even though I won’t get to celebrate with her on Mother’s Day, I do have some surprises for her when I return. My mom wears a lot of hats, so let me break it down how my thought process goes when I shop for her (I also like to shop in themes/ sets). And no, Mommy, nothing on here is exactly what you’re getting. 😉
