I talk a lot on the blog about working at Pier 1. There are things I certainly don’t miss- the hours, mostly- but I do miss being surrounded by pretty things that inspired me. The seasonal stuff was the best, even if the “seasons” did move about a month or more earlier than the calendar year.
My last day at Pier 1 happened to fall on the delivery day of our Christmas shipment. It was the first Wednesday in October and it was 85 degrees. I actually ended up with a nasty sunburn from sitting outside opening box after box of Christmas treasures. I actually left with Christmas + Halloween merchandise that day and I just reminded myself that I should probably put out my Halloween décor before my friend Ally comes to visit this weekend.
One of the main pillars that Pier 1 taught employees was to “surprise + delight” guests as they walk into the store. Many times, we would be surprised and delighted ourselves. As I said last week, I learned that “non-traditional” colors for certain times of year could really tie a home décor look together. I challenge you this year (as we’re finally getting some fall weather) to dress your home in an unexpected, maybe lighter, fall pallet. Throw some aqua, pink, or white in with your orange, browns, and greens. I promise that it’s actually not even that hard of a challenge.
