When I first started working at Pier 1, my home aesthetic (or should I say future home since I still lived with my parents) was loud, colorful, and a bit rustic. Employee discount and platinum credit card in hand, I bought and I bought and I bought things that eventually helped furnish my first apartment, and now the apartment I live in with Kendall.
Maybe it’s growing up or maybe it’s my newfound need to simplify (because of our small space and impending one-day move), or maybe it’s Kendall’s preference for more muted décor rubbing off on me- but I’m drawn to simpler, more muted things for home now. We registered for clear glass every-day plates, for example, to replace the almost Grecian-tile looking set I bought at Pier One.  Not to say I don’t love a pop of color, but I don’t necessarily want to surround myself with it at this point.
That’s also not to say I don’t love unique pieces, and Etsy has some really pretty things for home. As you probably know, supporting an Etsy shop is supporting a small business. It’s cliché but it’s true. When you buy from Etsy, or any small business, you’re not putting money in the pocket of some CEO, but you’re helping to pay for someone’s daughter’s ballet lessons, someone’s books for college, or even someone’s mortgage. Etsy is real people sharing their craft.
