One trend that seems to come back summer after summer is the straw bag. I got my first straw bag probably around kindergarten, if not before. It was a little purse with my name stitched on it in hot pink straw. Candace had one too. My parents brought them back from a vacation to the Bahamas.
I was actually so excited to take Kendall to the famous straw market in Nassau, and was horribly disappointed that it seems to have turned into a tourist trap shell of its former self. It was mostly t-shirts and tchotchkes and the salespeople were so overly pushy that we left almost immediately.
There are so many different styles of woven bags that “straw bag” is kind of a misnomer. They can be made of straw, of course, but rattan can also come into play as well as palms! In fact, you can support the African Palms mission to dig a well and build a filtration system for a village in Tanzania by purchasing a tote made dried leaves of the dwarf palm! (I might be a little biased about this mission. It’s an outreach of my hometown church, St. John’s Episcopal in Olney, MD. My mom is actually going to Tanzania this summer to visit our sister village!)
I’m partial to the bigger totes with pom poms myself- what’s your favorite style?
