Last week, I went with my friend Meghann for the second time to see Taylor Swift on her second DC night of her Reputation Tour. It’s actually kind of cool; Tay loves her cats, Meredith and Olivia (Meg’s a Meredith, I’m an Olivia) and she donated a bunch of tickets to the Humane Rescue Alliance for volunteers and foster families. There was a raffle, and Meghann won, so I got to go.
Up until a few years ago, I refused to like Taylor Swift. Mostly because this really obnoxious girl in college was annoyingly obsessed with her, but partially because it seemed like she was kind of a weirdo. But then Blank Space came out and I gave up resisting… and who am I kidding? I’m queen of the weirdos.
On the 1989 Tour, she had little vignettes of her friends talking about her and one thing kind of stuck with me, a quote from Lena Dunham. I’m not her biggest fan either but this makes sense. She said something to the effect of it’s hard enough navigating relationships in your 20s but imagine trying to do it while the media is waiting for you to fail. YIKES. My bad, TayTay, no more judgement because DAMN I cannot even imagine going through some of the stuff I did with tabloids on my heals.
The 1989 Tour was super theatrical and kind of dark, and even though Reputation is a darker album, it seemed like Taylor had more fun with this tour. She just seemed happier. I wasn’t super familiar with the album, but I’ve had  This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things stuck in my head since her explosive (literally) finale.
We literally couldn’t have nice things because the stadium rules for bags are bizarre. I had a fun little cross body bag that was small enough, but Meg opted to just bring in a gallon-sized baggie. (I had one in my purse just in case.) I understand the need to keep people safe at large events but the clear and/ or tiny bag rule seems a little  absurd.
Meg wore really adorable moto leggings and a tank, I chose the softest t-shirt dress (almost sold out in Camotanical but on sale!) and my tried-and-true navy Vans. It was upwards of 85 degrees, we were hoofin’ it around FedEx Field (WOOF) and let’s be real who were we trying to impress? We just wanted to stay comfortable and cool- no fuss needed.
I think I’m past the age where I really want to dress up for concerts. I’ll usually rock a cute band tee, jeans, and kicks, but I’m not going to do my hair for it to end up in a ponytail and I’m certainly not wearing a halter-top a la my hood-rat 9:30 Club days from High School. I might put on some extra eyeliner depending on how heavy the band is.
I have a couple questions for you today: how do you like to dress for concerts and what kind of bag do you like to bring with you?
