Peru Travel Diaries: Colorful Cusco
So if you’re interested in taking a South American adventure for your next holiday, make sure you don’t miss these unforgettable locations. You’re guaranteed to have an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience, and you’ll feel refreshed once you return home.
Machu Picchu
A Machu Picchu tour could be a life-changing experience. You’ll be unable to contain your excitement for this amazing location once you take a look through Google images or various tour guides. Machu Picchu attracts all kinds of holidaymakers. From ageing seniors who want to experience the serene atmosphere to young hikers who want to explore ancient history with their hands and eyes, you’ll find a colourful medley of people here.
The word “Machu Picchu” means “old mountain” in the Quechua language. The area is a 550-year old citadel that was built by an advanced society back in its days. It stands roughly 8,000 ft above the sea level and its ruins are about the size of a village. Combined with the forest and wilderness, this historical sanctuary covers over 116 square miles. Machu Picchu is caked in mystery as even the most established historians and archaeologists don’t understand its purpose. It serves as a residential and religious area, but no one knows the significance of why it was built so high in the mountains.
Lake Titicaca
Lake Titicaca is known in Andean belief to be the birthplace of the sun—and there’s no other description that can do this place justice. It’s the largest lake in South America and the highest body of water in the world that can be navigated. The water takes on a beautiful blue shade that shimmers from the rays of the sun, but they contrast with the cold and bitter nights that you’ll experience. It’s a location that screams with local attractions and natural landmarks that you won’t want to miss.
You can take a boat ride across the lake to experience the area with your own eyes, there are many islands to stay at, and there are many weekend markets where you can pick up fresh produce and souvenirs.
The Sacred Valley
This aptly named area is tucked under some large sweeping foothills. The Sacred Valley (also known as El Valle Sagrado) is about 15km north of Cuzco. Many travel agencies inside of Cuzco offer tours around the Sacred Valley. They’ll take you to see all the splendid sights, archaeological areas and local markets that offer everything from delicacies to clothing items.
The Sacred Valley is an incredibly popular destination for people that love to hike. The area is filled with beautiful architecture and natural landmarks, but you can also partake in adrenaline-fueled activities such as rafting and rock climbing. These activities are usually organized inside of Cuzco.
