I apologize if this is turning into a bit of a skincare blog. But our skin is our biggest organ, the first thing people notice about us, and the armor that protects us. We need to be kind to it and protect it right back. Friends and reviews are excellent ways to get opinions on skincare, but what if I told you there was an objective and easy way to vet the products you use or products you might want to try?
While clean beauty is having quite the surge right now (and rightfully so), you are more than likely to come across and ingredient or two in your skincare routine that you might not be able to pronounce, much less know what it does.
When I did my post last week about the Holika Holika Master Serum, my friend Meghann chimed in on my Instagram post and let me know about a site called CosDNA. It’s completely eye-opening. Not only do they have a wealth of products already in their database, you can also copy paste an entire ingredient list to be analyzed. I actually made a (free) account so I can save the products I look up.
But what does it tell you? Let’s compare two of my favorite face wipes.
First of all, the fewer ingredients on the list, the better. Then each ingredient is analyzed for potential to cause acne and irritation, from levels 0-5, 0 being the best and 5 being the worst. The last category is a little wonkier- Meghann’s advice is to individually look up the ingredients with the higher levels in the safety category to see what the actual dangers are and make a decision for yourself.
And yes, I’m switching back to Yes To Tomatoes Detoxifying Charcoal Clear Skin Face Wipes.
Maybe I’m a giant nerd but I actually kind of had fun looking up just about everything I’ve ever put on my face. Have you ever used it? Let me know in the comments below if you’ve learned anything about your skincare routine!
