When I first realized that I had the day off for the inauguration, I suggested to Mama D that we take the weekend and have a little girls’ trip. Kendall was out of town for his drill anyway, so why not take advantage of the long weekend? (sidebar: I am so proud + pleased for everyone that attended the march that it was such a peaceful, yet empowering, day!)

We decided to head to head to Pennsylvania to visit my mom’s best friend, my Auntie Steph, and to check out Longwood Gardens. I grew up going to Longwood year-round- in the summer for the light-up fountain shows, in the winter for their amazing Christmas displays. For gorgeous flowers in or outside any time. We happened to be there on the opening day of the Orchid Extravaganza. It was so nice to walk around the grounds then head into a warm, fragrant greenhouse to feel the summer and see so many bright colors. Don’t get me wrong, the grounds of the garden have their own special, almost ethereal quality in winter, but seeing the flowers in all of their glory when it was gloomy and damp outside only made me appreciate them more.

If you are anywhere between New York and Virginia, I highly recommend the Brandywine Valley for an inexpensive yet lovely weekend getaway. The gardens have a history dating back to the 1700s, and like I said, there are displays and events all year round. I’m actually really excited to take Kendall there after Memorial Day for the grand reopening of their fountain show, as well as their specially summer night light displays.

If you do make your way there, consider staying at the Mendenhall Inn. I have stayed there multiple times and for the price especially, it cannot be beat. Just make sure you have reservations because they do a lot of weddings (of course, I’ve been to one of those too.) They also have a great restaurant and bar. Since I grew up visiting this area quite often, I’d love to answer any questions or give suggestions of other area places to eat, things to do, etc. Mostly, if you’re looking to get out of a cold winter funk, I think you should go see a bit of summer indoors.
