When I think of commuter shoes, I immediately imagine scenes from Working Girl. Very prominently featured in some of the first moments of this video, high top sneakers with clunky socks used to be the pick of ladies hustling to to their office jobs, heels in tow or stashed under desks.

While the high top sneaker is coming back in a very retro sort of way, we have so many choices now! The line between sneaker and flat is somewhat blurred. My go-to, the Steve Madden Ecentrcq, have put up with a few years of pounding pavement all over NW, but there are no complaints if I “forget” to change into the Nine West flats that live under my desk.

It’s a well-known fact that I have to just about be forced into heels- but for good reason. I have arthritis from a bout with Lymes when I was in middle school. The arthritis was discovered years later, after having to repeatedly pop my knee back in place when it would lock up at dance practice. While I’m lucky that it’s not really severe, I click and pop all the time and even spending a night in heeled boots really hurts me the next day. So I prefer cute sneakers. They’re really more my #brand anyway.

I guess what I’m saying is take care of yourself but you don’t have to sacrifice style! I know sneaker wedges are a hit or miss with folks but if you need that little bit of height, my sneaker wedges are actually some of the most comfortable shoes I own… I think because I have high arches.

How do you get to work? Do you wear your work shoes, cute sneakers, or go for simple comfort?
