It may still feel like winter, but spring will soon be here. A good spring clean can be great therapy, as well as be the perfect excuse for getting your home sparkling for the new season.

Why not focus this year’s spring cleaning on de-cluttering? Mine is clothes that don’t fit, things I haven’t worn, purses I haven’t used, and statement necklaces that are missing gems.

Clearing out the clutter can transform your home in many ways, and is a great way to start off the year. Take a look at these top tips to make tackling your clutter a breeze.

Get ready to be ruthless

One of the key factors for de-cluttering success is ruthlessness. It can be difficult to part with some household items, but if you held onto everything, then you’d soon run out of space in your home. When assessing which items should stay and which should go, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Have I used this item in the past year?
  • Will I use it in the next year?
  • Is it broken (and can it be repaired?)?
  • Would I buy this again if I saw it in a store?

If you’ve answered no to any of these, it’s time for it to go. Let go of the fear that you might need something again in the future. If it’s been sat there gathering dust for years, chances are you aren’t going to miss it.

Toss, recycle, donate or sell

When dividing up the items that you want to get rid of, split them into different categories. Toss items that are beyond repair and can’t be recycled. Recycle items that are made from recyclable materials. Donate items that are still in good condition that could be useful to those in need and sell items that could earn you money. Anything broken, ripped, etc. is getting donated to Give Back Box, and anything in good condition is being sent straight to thredUP. I’m kind of over Poshmark at the moment because I hate being haggled with when my prices are already low. I won’t make as much back with ThredUP, but it’s SO much easier and they donate what they don’t by from you.

If you do decide to go down the ‘sell’ route, find a courier service that will collect and deliver your items. You’ll find it much easier to sell your unwanted goods and save yourself the hassle of trying to ship large or bulky items.

Invest in new storage solutions

Even after clearing a large portion of your clutter, you might find that you’re still battling with unsightly messes in your home that stop it from looking neat and tidy. Making use of clever storage solutions that hide your clutter is a great idea, and could add some stylish new pieces to your home. Coffee tables, footstools and decorative boxes/trunks are great items that will keep your clutter out of the way so that you can enjoy walking into a clutter-free and beautiful home.

Tackling your unwanted clutter is a great way to start off the year. A regular de-cluttering is good for the soul and will stop the need for another major session this time next year. If you’re looking for further ways to de-clutter your home, why not move onto your wardrobe next? Tackling your overflowing wardrobe would help you save some space, and could even help you rediscover old favorites! Make plans to de-clutter your home and start embracing more organized living.
