I am proud to say that I am a success story of art therapy. After my sister died, I think that weekend, actually, our pastor’s wife suggested that I go into therapy and that art therapy would probably be a good option for me. I didn’t only not object, I enthusiastically agreed to go. Despite what my high school suggested, I stayed off any medication to “help me focus” and went the talking route instead. (I also threw myself into dance company, photography, and hanging out in any free art studio where I wasn’t underfoot after school.) I got back on honor roll in time for graduation, which I consider one of my biggest successes.

One thing that I learned about myself, aside from working through some very complicated emotions for a child, is that I’m extremely tactile. What I mean by that is that anything I created with Wendy, my therapist, had to have texture for me for it to feel complete. My favorite thing to do with her was paint. So one week I would paint and talk and the following week I would either continue working on what I was doing or sit with the painting on my lap, telling her what I created and why. After a few times of this, Wendy realized that as I talked about my painting, I’d run my hand over it pretty much constantly. A lot of my pieces had things stuck to them- CDs or sequins or anything to make them 3D. I was really unsatisfied with one, and Wendy realized it was because it was too flat.

This wasn’t a huge revelation. Honestly, I’m a walking bundle of sensory overload in all ways, but touch has always brought me a sense of comfort and security. I was one of those kids who always had to be reminded “touch with your eyes not with your hands.”  I still sleep with Little Pillow- once a pillow and now essentially a square of flannel. I probably shouldn’t admit this, but when I get upset I rub my face on it.

Whatever y’all. I’m weird. You should know this.

Fall is great because textures start to come out to play. Summer is all about lightweight cotton for me, but with fall comes suede and heavy sweaters and velvet and oooohhh I can’t wait. What are some of your favorite textures to wear?

Getting to dress up in a theme is one of my favorite things to do, and the 4th of July is one of the best holidays for that. In DC, it’s already heating up and I’m trying to figure out how to wear as little as possible while still representing that red, white, and blue. I’m especially excited that I get to celebrate with my army guy since he’ll have returned to me. (EEK! He’ll be home Friday/ Saturday and I CANNOT WAIT!)

While his outfit is probably consisting of either this shirt or these shorts I picked up for him the last time he was away, I haven’t figured mine out. I kind of want to wear this dress or this one, but I can’t find either. I’m starting to think there’s a troll in my closet eating my clothes- either that or there’s a purple bin I haven’t touched since I moved in. REGARDLESS- what is this patriotic princess to do?

If you’re trying to figure out an insta-worthy outfit on a budget, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite pieces under $50 to help get you started. I can’t wait to see all that red, white, and blue!

I can’t believe I almost turned down this dress while shopping with my mom before Christmas at the new Clarksburg Premium Outlets. We were in Ralph Lauren, and I’d actually wanted to try on another dress that they didn’t have in my size when my mom pulled this stunner off a rack. I tried it on and wanted to cry- I felt huge. I felt like my arms were gigantic and I had stubby legs. But my mom told me it was actually a slimming cut for me and, after seeing these pictures, I’m going to have to agree. Why is it that sometimes it takes someone else to tell us we look good to believe it? I’m short and I’m curvy but I take care of myself and dammit if I’m not feeling great right now.

And something about leather- I felt like a total bad-ass when I wore this outfit to work. I wore the jacket like a blazer- it was light enough to wear under my winter coat + keep me comfy in the office AC. Because of the length of the dress, OTK boots kind of cut off my legs, which just gave me an excuse to rock a pair of heels, something I’ve been trying to do more. The necklace was just a treat to myself because I’ve been eyeing blue statement necklaces and this one happened to be half off. Unfortunately, the sale is over, but T+J Designs is constantly having sales, so I’m sure it’ll come back around.

I think the sparkle/ leather/ polished look worked for me. I’m finding that the more polished I am for work, the better I feel. Fitted and professional wear just makes me feel good. What do you wear to feel confident at work?
