Winter is well and truly upon us and it can be the harshest time of year for our skin. Cold weather, dry heat and rain or snow is a recipe for disaster when it comes to keeping your skin in good condition. That’s why it’s so important to take extra care during the Winter months. So, what can you do to make sure your skin stays clear, full of moisture and glowing?

Switch to Warm

When you come in from the freezing cold at the end of the day, it’s so tempting to run a hot bath or shower to warm yourself up. Of course, there will be times when that’s needed and deserved, but if you really want to take care of your skin, warm temperatures may be better. Going from cold to hot could do your skin more damage than you realize. Try washing your face in lukewarm water with a face cloth at the end of the day.

Focus on Moisturizing

Moisturizing is never more important that it is during the Winter. You’ll probably find that your skin loses moisture even after washing, so it’s a good idea to moisturize immediately after. You can find some of the best Winter moisturizers at Moisturizers.com. Don’t be afraid to use your moisturizer liberally through the Winter. Your skin will need it!

Choose Your Products Wisely

Many women use a number of different products on their faces every day. From cleansers and toners to makeup and face wipes. During the Winter months, it’s important to be aware of the ingredients present in your products. For example, some products containing petroleum can work to dry out your skin further. The best products you can use on your face during this time contain natural oils that aid your skin in restoration. Lavender and Chamomile are especially soothing on dry skin.

Protect Your Skin

Your skin needs a little extra help to fight against the elements during Winter. You can keep your skin protected by dressing suitably for the cold weather. Gloves will protect the sensitive skin on your hands and scarves will protect your neck from the wind. If you’re lucky enough to experience some sunshine during your Winter, it’s also important to remember to wear sunscreen. Even if there’s snow on the ground, the sun can still burn.

Stay Hydrated

It’s easy to forget about hydration in the Winter because we often switch from drinking water and other cold drinks to drinking teas, coffees and hot chocolates. However, these warmer drinks don’t often provide enough hydration for our bodies. If you notice your skin becoming dry, try switching a few of your teas for bottled water instead. Drinking water during Winter will also help you to steer clear of the flu if your colleagues are coughing and sneezing around you.

Turn Down the Heat

We survive in Winter by turning up the heat in our homes and our cars. However, this kind of dry heat is no good for your skin and you may find yourself breaking out in spots or having difficulty applying makeup smoothly. You can avoid this kind of damage to your skin by turning the heat down or using a humidifier in your home. The humidifier will work to restore the moisture in your home and effectively, your skin too.

Overnight Conditioning

There are certain parts of your body that may become drier quicker than others. These are usually the hands, feet, elbows and knees where the skin is thinner. Luckily, there are plenty of moisturizing treatments to choose from that can work overnight to lock in moisture in your skin. For example, you can buy gloves filled with deep moisturizing creams that you can wear throughout the night and take off in the morning. The same goes for socks and face masks.

Exfoliate

Many people make the mistake of believing that exfoliating will dry out already dry skin. That isn’t the case. Without exfoliating, your dead skin cells are left to build up and create a barrier against moisture. If moisture is blocked from getting into your skin, your skin suffers. It’s important to exfoliate at least once a day during Winter so your skin is free to accept the moisture from creams and other products.

Go Makeup Free

When you get a day off, and all you want to do is stay indoors in your pajamas, forget the makeup too. Makeup can include toxins and irritants that make Winter skin much harder to manage. Giving your face a day off from the products you usually use will give it the freedom to heal and breathe. Just one day could be enough to give your skin the detox it needs.

Facial Mask

DIY Masks

Sometimes, your facial skin needs a little extra attention. However, that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on expensive treatments. In fact, a lot of the best ingredients for soft and smooth skin will already be in your kitchen cupboards. For example, honey is good for calming irritated skin and coconut oil is good for restoring moisture. Find some DIY recipes that suit your skin type and spend an evening pampering your skin.

Eat a Balanced Diet

You are what you eat, as they say. It’s easy to indulge in our favorite foods this time of year, but they aren’t always the best choice for your skin. Don’t forget to get a good variety of fruit and veg in your diet because they contain vital vitamins and nutrients your skin needs to stay as healthy as possible. If you find it difficult to add fruits and veg to your diet around this time of year, try taking a multivitamin supplement instead. That way, your skin is covered even if your diet isn’t.

Pampering skin during the Winter can seem like a full-time job, but if you want to glow your way through all those Christmas parties, it’s something you have to stay on top of. Remember, a beautiful smile is the best accessory you can wear.

There has definitely been a rise in people showing an interest in the health of their skin over the past couple of years. With so many products on offer, it can be hard to know exactly where to start with it all. It’s not an overwhelming process unless you make it so; the most important thing that you need to consider is staying on top of your routine to be able to see a difference in your skin, as well as possibly changing parts of your lifestyle to give yourself the best start.

All Natural Foaming Face Wash

Drink More Water

Good skin starts with good hydration. Before you start with any other products, pick up the most natural product of all and start drinking more water. You should aim for at least eight glasses per day, if not a few more. This isn’t just good for your skin, but your body on the whole – and especially your brain. You’ll be increasing your focus and concentration, meaning that you’ll be able to think more clearly about what you are doing in regards to your skincare routine. Not only that, but you’ll begin to notice the difference in your skin within a couple of days; blemishes tend to clear up a lot more quickly when they’ve got water to work with.

Cleanse, Tone, Moisturize

As long as you get down the basics, you can build on from there. The Big 3 to have is a cleanser, a toner and a moisturizer. It’s a good idea to follow a guide to skin care if you aren’t sure about how much to use and where to use it. There are companies that offer what you need in bundles in order to get you the basics without having to shop around for it, but it doesn’t mean that you necessarily have to stick with the same line of products. You may find that mixing and matching suits your skin better; we all have different skin types, and while one brand may be great for your best friend, it could bring you out in a rash or leave your skin feeling more dry or oily than usual. Don’t be afraid to have a play around with what you think may suit, and if you don’t get on with a product, don’t give up on skincare all together – there will be something out there for you.

Look For Incorporated Products

Makeup brands are becoming wise as to the benefits that people are looking for when they choose their beauty products. Some foundations and facial creams have started adding in sunray filters, with UVA and UVB deflectors being present within to protect your skin. Look for the brands which have teamed up with skincare companies to bring you the best of both worlds  – it’s not too much to ask that something that you wear every day is looking after your skin rather than making it worse. It’s getting straight to the point and could be saving you quite a bit of time during your daily routine.

A lot of people will focus intensely on the diet side of getting healthy. Yes, eating healthy is important, but there’s another side of it that we don’t explore as much. We’re talking about what you drink. They don’t feel substantial so they feel like they have no effect, but the truth is that there’s plenty of good, bad, and otherwise that what you drink can do to your body.

Free to Sparkle Tumbler

The essential

Let’s start by saying what everyone already knows. We need to get more water. How much water exactly you should drink is an individual amount, but it’s around 104 ounces for men (or 13 cups) and 72 ounces (9 cups) for women. But drinking water isn’t the only way to get the benefits of water, either. It’s important in skincare, too. If your dehydration is showing through dry, wrinkling skin, or even chronic skin conditions, then make sure you’re only using skincare products with hydrating properties and mild, non-foaming cleansers that won’t dry out your skin.

The good

There are plenty of other hydrating drinks to rely on, as well. Fruit juice, for instance, can really break up the monotony of glass after glass of water. Certain juices can help with different things, too. Orange juice fights inflammation, grape juice improves brain function and so on. We can’t ignore the power of tea, either. A good detox tea improves cholesterol, reduces blood level sugars, fights bloating, and acts as a natural diuretic. Even one cup a day to go with the water and fruit juice can do you a lot of good.

The bad

So, what should you be cutting out? One of the greatest culprits for both weight gain and addiction to unhealthy dietary habits is soda. The more you can cut it from your life, the better. Most cans of soda contain around 10 teaspoonfuls of soda, to begin with.  Even diet sodas tend to contain artificial sweeteners which can be bad for your bone health and cause dental problems with a lot of consumption. Beyond soda, alcohol is something we all need to be careful with. A glass of wine a day might be good for you, but indulging in it too often can cause problems like stomach ulcers, increased blood pressure, and long-term loss of brain cells.

The ugly

Too much of a good thing is bad for you, as we know. There are side effects to all the positives mentioned above. For one, drinking too much water or fruit juice can lead to unpleasant bloating that will stick with you for hours. Tea is best in the evenings so it can help you deal with that bloating. As for tea, even those miracle drinks can have side effects if you drink so much, including the urge to keep running back to the toilet.

Yes, tea and water are much better for you than alcohol and soda. They are undoubtedly replacements you should make. But there are unexpected side effects even to healthy drinks you should be prepared for, too.

Is there anything that’s rougher than trying to maintain a healthy, sleek look through the winter? (Other than the feeling of winter itself, of course. Sleet in your face and snow leaking through your favorite boots are not experiences that anyone wants to go through very often.) Winter is rough on your appearance – but luckily there are some ways that you can fight against it…

S’well Elements 17oz Water Bottle

Keep Hydrating

As we all know, the skin is an organ, which means that it’s made up of cells, which are, of course, mostly made up of water. The eight glasses of water each day thing that we’ve all read about countless times is largely a myth – but it is crucial that you keep drinking it in order to make your skin look bright and full. Drinking plenty of water also ensures that your hair keeps its full, glossy look all winter long. If you find that it looks thin or lifeless, talk to your doctor as you may have a vitamin deficiency or a problem with your thyroid.

Protect Yourself From The Elements

If you want to keep your hair looking good through the winter as well as the summer, it’s time to invest in a hat. ‘What’s that?’ I hear you say. ‘Risk hat hair all winter? Is she crazy?’ Not crazy in the least, my friends. Rain, wind and cold temperatures can damage your hair by making it more brittle and easily breakable – particularly if you go outside with hair that’s still wet from the shower. (But of course that’s a whole other issue – do you want to use heat products on your hair every day?) Make sure that you cover your hair with a hat or a hood and protect your skin by pulling your scarf up over your face. Go for high quality skincare and hair-care products like the ones at NaturalHavenCo.com – they’ll be extra enriching and full of ingredients that are great for you. It’s important to find a brand and a formula that suits you.

NARS – Blush – Orgasm

Change Your Makeup Routine

Orange foundation is probably the most appalling of all makeup sins, and it’s way too easy to make that mistake in the winter when you’re at your most pale and interesting. Go for a paler shade of foundation and concealer than you would in the winter, and make sure that you blend it in carefully to your neck and hairline. Beauty blenders can help with this, or a fat, soft foundation brush with short bristles. You might think that foundation brushes with longer bristles are the best – but the truth is that they don’t blend your foundation into your pores as well, and instead spread it over your skin like a paintbrush, which is not a good look. It may be winter but you can still go for a little gleam with blusher with a slight sparkle in it – try out NARS Orgasm for a traditionally excellent look that suits everyone – along with a little highlighter on the point of your face that the light hits, like your brow bone, your cheekbones, and the bow of your lips.

I’m so glad that somewhere after college I finally decided to take care of my skin properly- rather than baking and drying it out, I made a conscious decision to look after myself inside and out. SPF is my friend, so is moisture, hydration, and even having the right diet.

Say No To Sunbathing

While everyone loves to feel the warm rays of sunshine on their bare skin, they tend to forget just how intense UVA and B rays can be, and how too much exposure can permanently damage your skin. Try to stay out of direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day, between 10am and 2pm, pop on a wide-brimmed hat to protect your head slip on a lovely kaftan and don’t forget your sunglasses. It’s important to limit exposure to avoid uneven skin tones, dark patches and the risk of melanoma or skin cancer.

Hydration Is Key

Experts state that everyone should be drinking at least eight large glasses of water a day, more if you’re undertaking any physical activity or exercising. While youthful skin tends to be tanned, blemish-free and firm as we get older it can lose that springiness. Lack of hydration can cause your skin to become dry, papery and prone to wrinkles and liver spots.

Try Anti-Ageing Creams

There are a plethora of luxuriously packaged and celebrity endorsed anti-ageing products. Drugstore and supermarket shelves are jam packed with creams, potions and serums all claiming to reduce wrinkles, tighten skin and relieve tired eyes. Pentapeptides help skin cells to produce more collagen which contributes to firming up skin. Why not try a dragon’s blood serum? Soothe Dry Skin

If you suffer from exceptionally dry skin, you may want to consult your doctor who’ll then refer you to a dermatologist. In the meantime, there are things women can do to improve their skin such as swapping face wash for enriched moisturizers specifically for dry skin.
