Tag Archives: off the shoulder

It’s time to ditch the autumnal layers, burnt oranges, and scarves, and make way for the biggest trends of the season. Spring is all about vitality and life so it makes sense that the trends on the catwalk are bold and colorful too. What’s become clear is that a hint of skin is very in. This trend is set to go through spring and into the summer months too, so it’s well worth investing in. Here’s how to nail the hint of skin spring look, and feel confident enough to bare all…

Off The Shoulder

Off the shoulder tops are huge this season, but it’s only one side of the classic design that’s being given the cold shoulder. Tops which drop on one side are easy to wear and flattering for most shapes. The traditional off the shoulder top exposed both shoulders and could make some of us look a little broad. Luckily for us, it’s about one dropped shoulder this season. This look works well with a blue and white striped fabric, oversized sunglasses and chinos or jeans, think riviera style!

Sports

The sports luxe look was huge last year and transformed humble gym gear. This spring’s all about reinventing athleisure. Alexander Wang, Versace, and Dolce & Gabbana all showcased sporty looks which flashed a little flesh. Loose short shorts or tight slightly cropped leggings are a good way to nail this look. Pair leggings with an oversized parka just like Versace. If you’re not looking forward to flashing your legs after a long cold winter, that’s understandable. Make sure you exfoliate your entire body once a week and try applying tinted moisturizer for a sun kissed look on your legs. This will make you feel confident enough to rock this look.

Utilitarianism

This trend mixes the best of both worlds. Boxy and boyish shapes are combined with deep v-neck cuts to combine androgynous with femininity. This trend works best with a khaki fabric and oversized pieces. Scarves are the go-to accessory for winter and it can be daunting to do away with them. Unfortunately wearing scarves can irritate our skin, which won’t leave it ready for plunging necklines! Use skincare products which contain retinol. Retinol is widely used as an alternative to anti wrinkle injections. It is amazing at reducing the appearance of fine lines, making skin appear fuller, and also rejuvenated. It’s a must for anyone looking to trial this trend. Your skin really will be your best accessory so make sure face to neck, you’re glowing.

Sheer Cut-Out Dresses

This has been a huge trend on the red carpet as stars embrace the cut-out sheer dress look. Sheer dresses are placed over oversized briefs/shorts and bodies. This works best when the materials are darker as it creates a romantic, gothic look.

I don’t know about you, but I find this transition period between winter and spring a little bit awkward. The weather can be so changeable, so it can be hard to know what to wear. The morning might start out overcast and grey, but by the afternoon the sun has come out, and it is nice and warm. Meaning what you’ve gone to work wearing isn’t suited to the weather in the afternoon. The struggle is real! So here are some essentials to get you through the transitional period, and get you ready for the glorious spring weather.

Metallics

In spring, it does tend to be all about the colors. Pastels and floral prints are everywhere. But this year I am all about some metallic vibes to complement the color. You could channel the look with a silver midi skirt or a gold jacket. But if you’re not feeling quite bold enough just yet, there are other options for you. Go with some metallic accessories, and you’ll be onto something. It could be some silver flats or brogues. A rose gold clutch or chunky costume jewelry. The key thing to remember is that a little bit of metallic sparkle will go a long way!

Light Pink

As has been said, spring does tend to be about color. But this season I can already tell that light pink is going to be the pastel color of choice. I love how versatile it can be. It can be worn with skirts and shirts, as well as sneakers and accessories. It is a much more subtle color option to wear, which is another reason why I am loving it. You can make the look uber girly too, putting white and soft pink together. Which is what I have been seeing a lot of on social media, like on the Petal Boutique Instagram page. I also like how you can keep things looking a lot more casual with these colors too. Think of some light pink sneakers worn with dungarees, for example.

Off the Shoulder

Tops worn off the shoulder are a big look for this time of year, and they’ll carry on until the warmth of summer too. There are a lot of tops that are of one shoulder, which make it easier to wear in this transitional period. Not as much skin is on show, so it works if it does suddenly start to rain. But to fully embrace the trend, there are lots of tops that are more bandeau style that sits off both shoulders. But you might want to keep that until we well and truly have some sunshine.

Cropped White Pants

Who cares what people say about white, it can be worn whenever you want to. A cropped pair of white pants looks great at this time of year. They look perfect with a floral shirt or a soft pink jacket. They’d look good with a pair of metallic slippers too. The fact that they are cropped makes a difference as it shows you’re embracing the spring vibes.

I don’t know about other engaged/ married ladies, but when Kendall popped the question, I wanted to tell the world. And I did. We got lucky in that our proposal was actually taped by a WTK band member/ YouTuber, so it’s immortalized on the ‘tube FOR-EV-ER (and it’s been viewed over 46k times!) besides being on my blog. I could talk wedding all day long, and I’ve actually apologized to my friends and family for being super lame insanely excited  about my engagement and they’ve all told me the same thing: it’s my time. And you know what? After all the weddings I’ve attended and been init is.

While I didn’t even consider flashing my ring all over social media the minute I got engaged, it is an absolutely stunning symbol of my my and Kendall’s new life together. He picked it just for me and it’s basically a combo of every ring I’ve ever loved. I also, pretty much immediately, picked up the Bride trucker hat I wore to the Barbie brunch last weekend. I just kind of want to shout it from the rooftops that I’m taken- by the most amazing guy on the planet. I am truly lucky that I get to spend the rest of my life with him.

Incidentally, today is my birthday! And I couldn’t ask for a better gift than all the love I’ve received this year from both him and everyone else in my life. Thank you to everyone who has made 27 my best year. 28 will only be better because I get to marry the love of my life!

Love is in the air with Valentine’s Day coming up tomorrow so I thought I would get onto one of my personal favorite subjects- weddings! So far I have two in 2017, possibly a third because one of my bests from just got engaged. One is in New York over the summer and the other is Charleston in September. Also- Kendall’s sister has a wedding in the works as do a couple of his friends, potentially. Never-ending love, folks!

I don’t know about you all, but I consider goings to weddings almost like having adult prom. It gives me a chance to get dolled up and dance the night away- whether stag or with my handsome date. Kendall and I love getting dressed up together and we actually coordinated really well for my sorority sister’s wedding this past December.

The first wedding I’m going to the bride told me is going to be “garden cocktail.” I freakin’ LOVE the sound of that. I’m actually going to be wearing a dress I wore in another wedding that I’ve had shortened to cocktail length. I’ve already re-worn it once- the a country farm wedding with cowgirl boots. I’m thinking pairing it this time with pastel heels maybe like these and a floral necklace like this. I am getting my wear out of this dang dress. But I love the idea of garden cocktail. It makes me think of Gatsby parties!

The other wedding is black tie optional for men, gowns for women. The bride, the lovely Sahra, put it this way: I don’t want to see your knees. Hey- the girl has a flair for the dramatic and I respect that! This is a little trickier since at this point the only floor-length formal dress I have is ivory, and even if she says that’s ok, I would still feel so funny about that. One of my cardinal rules of wedding going is that guests should not wear white or white adjacent dresses. To Rent the Runway I will likely go, but I’m going to keep my options open because with my height I often  always need alternations on long dresses.

Is anyone else gearing up for weddings in 2017? I’d love to know all about them! I could trade wedding stories for days! In the meantime, check out my picks for Garden Cocktail + Black Tie! My “budget” picks are under $50!

Velvet came around in a big way this fall and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime fast. I’m actually wearing a red velvet dress for NYE- so much more comfortable than sequins let me tell you! I started noticing blue velvet and how rich it was before my friend Jenn’s wedding. I wore this dress with a killer pair of gold strappy heels, but I was considering a pair of block heel navy velvet pumps- I looked around a bit but decided since the rental was about how much I would have spent on a new dress, I didn’t need to splurge on new shoes as well.

Unlike blush velvet (which I still love, by the way), the dark blue/ navy family has an elegance about it. From the age of about 4-13, my Christmas dresses were black, navy, or hunter velvet, so I always associate dark velvet with getting fancy for Christmas or New Year’s Eve. However, I like the idea of an oversized velvet t or funky boots just as well as a festive frock. How do you velvet?
