I’ve always had very vivid and clear dreams. Saturday night, unfortunately, it was mostly nightmares, mostly wedding related. It’s strange, everyone keeps telling me how I must be totally stressed with the wedding less than 100 days away. Well, actually I wasn’t until you told me I should be, SHARON! (Sharon being the name for every single person who projects what they think I should be feeling onto me. Sharon is not a real person in this scenario.)

Anyway, I fell asleep in my favorite chair Saturday night and promptly fell into a pattern of stress-y dreams. In these dreams, my bridesmaids were asking me normal questions like, “hey- what kinds of accessories do we need?” and I kept forgetting to answer their texts and instead Googled unicorn clutches for no particular reason, even though in my dream I knew I needed to stay focused.

I mass texted them all on Sunday letting them know and wanting to make sure there wasn’t anything I was leaving unanswered for the time being. They thought it was hilarious and one jokingly offered to return her unicorn purse.

I think it’s fun that unicorns are so on trend. I think occasionally we need to escape the reality that is adulthood and global warming and politics and head into something whimsical, soft, and a little bit absurd.

Thanksgiving is barely a week away- the holidays are about to be in full swing. This year, Kendall and I are driving (yes, driving) to Baton Rouge after dinner at my parents’ house for a wedding on Saturday morning. It’s a 17 hour drive on a good day. Seeing as how it’s Thanksgiving weekend, I’m guessing we’re going to spend upwards of 40 hours in the car together next weekend. Jesus take the wheel.

Christmas Holiday Unicorn Design Pattern

Usually, Black Friday is a girls’ day situation with my mom and Auntie Steph. We go to Columbia Mall, early-ish, have lunch, shop until around 4. It’s relaxed but we definitely have a mission and a list. We never, ever shop on Thanksgiving Day.

Fist of all, it’s family time for us. Second of all, I cannot and will not go into a store staffed with employees who are not able to go home and spend time with their own families. It was hard enough on me working black Friday and the day after Christmas when I was in retail, but thankfully Pier One is one of the stores that shuts its doors completely for the holiday.

Check out my list of retailers who have pledged to stay closed on Thanksgiving, and consider giving your patronage to them!

A more complete list and additional information can be found here.

Happy Friday! Week two down at the new job and I finally am starting to feel settled. Wedding plans have been coming along nicely and my Etsy card is filling up as I find fun details for our special day. I keep dreaming that it’s the big day but nothing is done yet and honestly, between Kendall’s eagerness to plan, my awesome mom, my team of ‘maids, and the fact that I’ve been planning this day forever~ I’ll be fiiiiine.

I also wanted to say thank you again for the amazing support I got on my post about siblings who have lost siblings. I have amazing people in my life who have shown nothing but openness and understanding. Thank you, thank you, for checking out my little slice of the world and letting me totally show my soul.

Climbing Earrings

Lately on The CaroLøve:

There have been some GREAT blog posts from other amazing ladies this week:

Dana talked engagement and why it matters. This is great for both bloggers and people trying to understand bloggers.

Alissa described my. exact. issues. with clothes. It’s hard to be short and curvy and have a big bust and find clothes that fit. It feels like most of the time that clothes are both too big and too small at the same time. It’s great that for this post she’s wearing almost the red version of my engagement dress.

I don’t consider myself a bridezilla- in fact on of my bridesmaids’ mom thanked me for naht being that. Am I super excited and in total plan mode and maybe a little obnoxious? Absolutely. But there is one thing that will make me rage. Shell’s post says it all: DO {CLAP} NOT {CLAP} WEAR {CLAP} WHITE {CLAP} to a wedding that is not yours. Do not wear white adjacent colors to a wedding that is not yours (unless the brides makes you wear an ivory gown as her bridesmaid). If you have to ask if the dress is appropriate, DON’T WEAR IT. I’m saying this to anyone who is coming to my own wedding: my Auntie Steph + Tiffy will kick you TF out. I have been in/ involved in so many weddings and that day is my day. End rant. Love you. ‘Zilla moment over.

I’m on of those crazy people who is holding my breath waiting for fall. Groopdealz already has a great selection for Halloween!

J. Crew Factory is having an extra 50% off clearance sale. But it’s in stores only– so get to one!

TJ Maxx has a new online department: lingerie!

Mini Bags are back (or did they ever go away?) and Henri Bendel has some of the cutest lil thangs I’ve ever seen!

Have a wonderful weekend!

I think Spring has finally sprung in The District, you guys! The sun is shining and it’s warm enough I don’t need to layer if I don’t want to. It’s funny, until recently, I never would have thought put these pieces all together. I was kind of inspired by this look from Hallie to actually play with neutrals + grey. I ended up loving it! It felt fresh and light and amazingly easy. I’ve said it before how I rarely work grey at all before working at the firm, and I certainly never, ever thought I’d like it paired with khaki/ nude/beige/tan whatever. That was, ironically, a pretty big risk for me. I also love how the length of this denim skirt made it a-ok for work. And yessss my Gia bag did make another appearance, but I just love it so much!

Working at Pier 1, I had odd hours, but I have to give them props that we never worked on holidays- Christmas Eve + New Year’s Eve, sure. But I was always done with plenty of time for Midnight Mass for the former and champagne on the latter. This year, rather than bringing you Black Friday sales (hint: they’re everywhere!) I’m bringing you stores that support their employees by staying C L O S E D on Thanksgiving. It’s so important to be able to have that family time, and I so appreciate the stores, including my Pier 1, that do so.

If you’re looking to shop small this year rather than head to a typical retailer, you might want to check out some of my favorite Etsy shops:

  • Harp and Squirrel– not only can you get custom illustrations and original prints done by one of my favorite artists (I love the whole Bruckner family, really), they also have some adorable baby stuff
  • The Trendy SparrowChic apparel & gifts for the fashionable boss lady, I would wear/ use just about anything from her! Plus I adore Lindzi!
  • Tees And Tank You Shop– Quirky graphic tees, tanks, and sweatshirts. I own two.
  • Tints Shades Fine Art– Minimalist prints for a TON of different fandoms, also customize-able.  Kendall and I have a lion king print in our living room that artist Jocelyn changed the background color for and added text.
  • CelebriscentsCreative Scented Soy Candles for Special Occasions. I’m all about scented candles and it’s always nice to find scents I love for a bargain. These also have fun names. So far my favorite from this shop has been It’s A Boy (baby powder scented). These make great stocking stuffers!
  • This isn’t Etsy, but The Pretty Pink Rooster is a boutique a chic online boutique that showcases the most stylish jewelry, all for under $50.00! You may remember this shop from the #wcw post I did on their founder, Alexandra.

If you want to shop LOCAL this year:

  • Zen In A Jar– Luxury Care for the Mind | Body | Space
  • Whistle & Wild– A Boutique that caters to the one who doesn’t have a “fixed look”. Whistle & Wild carries an array of bohemian pieces as well as polished date-night looks. Most of (if not all) of the pieces that Amanda carries are made in the USA!
  • Trade Roots– a Fair Trade gift store and coffee shop located in Arlington, Virginia specializing in eco-friendly fair trade gifts from around the world.
  • Cherry Blossom Creative– Funny enough, I first heard of them when my sorority sister in Wisconsin sent me a beautiful map of Georgetown as a housewarming gift when I first moved into the city. I love the idea of hyper-localism.
  • Violet Boutique– the Washingtonian woman’s go-to shop for fun, trendy looks that easily go from work to weekend – and most for under $100.
  • For lots of local vendors at once, be sure to check out Streetmarket 2016: A Curated Holiday Pop-Up (Thursday, December 15, 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m) +
Downtown Holiday Market (opens Friday, November 25, and will run continuously through Friday, December 23.  Hours will be from Noon to 8 pm each day.)

Don’t forget that if you want to skip the Black Friday madness all together and shop in your pajamas from your couch, you should really sign up for ebates. You can earn cash back at so many places, and it’s super easy to sign up and start earning right away!

I’d love to know of more places staying closed on Thanksgiving, your favorite small shops, and best local treasures! Let me know in the comments, and have a very safe and happy holiday weekend!
