We’re getting to that point in the year where we can finally start dreaming of summer. It may only be April, but the temperature is rising, and the sun is beaming out from behind the clouds. It’s a wonderful time – but it does pose a problem for homeowners.

I always say that there’s never really a good time of year for homeowners. During Autumn/Winter, it’s always wet and cold, which provides you with two main issues to take care of. Then, when Spring/Summer come along, you have the issue of the sun. As lovely as the sun is, it can cause a whole host of problems in your home. For one, it can overheat your home and make it very uncomfortable to live in. Not only that, but the sun’s rays can cause damage to your property, belongings, and even your garden too.

Therefore, it’s very important that you take steps to protect your home from the sun this year. Neglect this, and you can ruin the way your home looks, as well as create issues that cost money to fix. Have no fear, protecting your house is far easier than it may seem. Here are some of my favorite ideas for taking care of the sun problem:

Keeping Your House Cool

To help make this piece easier for you to read, I’ve decided to split it up into three sections. This section will look at a few of the best ways you can protect your house from the extreme heat the sun might bring:

Keep Your Windows Open

One of the worst things you can do is leave your windows closed during the hot months. If you open them, then you start to air out your home. You let the fresh air circulate through the rooms, and you give the heat somewhere to escape out of. It’s like when you’re cooking something in a pan and put a lid on it. The pan gets much hotter, much quicker. Take the lid off, and the heat can fly out.

Invest In Some Fans

Sometimes, it can get so hot that opening your windows barely makes a difference. Here, you need to take action to help bring down the temperature in your house. One thing you can do is buy an HVAC system and use air conditioning to really cool it down. I love this idea, but it can be expensive to buy/install the system, and then it can create quite hefty energy bills. Instead, you can buy a portable fan that sits in a room and cools it down. I know Dyson do some effective ones, and they’re cheaper than air con while using up a fraction of the energy too.

Sun Damage In The Home

Next, we look at the way sun damages things in your home. It can cause discoloration to furniture, precious family heirlooms, and parts of your house as well. Here are some ideas for taking care of this:

Close Your Curtains/Blinds

A very simple way of protecting your belongings from sun damage is to keep them hidden in the shade. Close your curtains/blinds when the sun is at its hottest, and you stop the UV rays from doing their worst. As a secondary benefit, closing these things can also keep your house cooler as well!

Condition Leather Furniture

Leather sofas and chairs can often become dried and cracked thanks to the sun. So, to keep them protected, you need to apply a leather conditioner. This prevents both these issues from occurring and protects the furniture from the beating heat of the sun.

Sun Damage In The Garden

Finally, we have the issue of sun damage in your garden. If you love taking care of your garden, then you’ll hate it when the lawn gets all yellow and dried out. Most of the time, this is thanks to the constant sun beating down on it, causing all the moisture to evaporate and leave the soil. As well as this, many of your flowers can die an early death because the sun dries them up. So, here are some ideas to help deal with sun damage in the garden:

Keep Your Lawn Hydrated

I like to tell people that your lawn is a lot like your face. If you don’t keep your face hydrated, then you end up with dry skin and wrinkles. If you don’t keep your lawn hydrated, then it dries up and goes all yellow and crusty. Needless to say, this isn’t a great look, but it’s easy to fix. The secret is ensuring your lawn stays hydrated with water. As it shows on the Allen Outdoor Solutions websites, one of the best ways of doing this is with a sprinkler system. This helps you keep your whole lawn nice and hydrated, preventing it from drying out in the sun. If you have a small lawn, then you may be able to water it yourself, but sprinklers are great for large spaces.

Cover Your Flowers

Moving onto your flowers, and there are two main things to consider. The first is the same as the previous point; keep them well watered and hydrated. But, you should also think about covering them and keeping them in the shade from time to time. Especially if the sun is really beating down and it’s super hot. To do this, you can get an outdoor umbrella and just position it over your flowerbeds – much like you do to yourself when you’re lying in a beach chair!

There you go; six tips to help protect your home from the sun this year. As I’ve shown, the sun can cause numerous problems in and around your home. The worst thing you can do is neglect the sun and try to ignore the issues it can cause. If you’re well-prepared for the hottest months of the year, then you can stop all these problems from happening. Consequently, pay attention to the tips in this guide and you’ll keep your home in tip-top shape, making it more comfortable and keeping it beautiful.
