Like many of you, I had the day off yesterday. Kendall and I took full advantage and had ourselves a little adventure. You may have seen my Instagram post of Skyline Caverns in Front Royal, Virginia. We spent a good hour or so underground learning about Anthodites, stalagmites, stalactites, and how the Smithsonian may or may not have killed an entire species of beetle and we had a total blast! I would say if you’re in the mood for an educational and different day trip from The District that this would be a good call. They also have a mirror maze and mini train for little ones. Bring something warm- it’s 54 degrees in the caverns!
We hadn’t originally planned on the taverns at all, though. I saw an article a while back mentioning Dinosaur Land and I knew immediately I had to get there. It’s bizarre, but really sweet! For a small admission fee, you enter a park full of dinosaur models (and a shark and some tree characters and King Kong?). It has a kitschy feel to it without the sinister cloud of South of the Border, and it was actually really cute to see all the little kids running around the park picking out their favorite dinos. The park is definitely geared to kids- little kids- but it’s kind of awesome to see this little park that’s been around since the 60s. The statues are crumbling but the people working there are the sweetest and it’s a gorgeous piece of land as well! I went for the nostalgia and was not disappointed. It was Kendall’s idea to hit the caverns after, and I’m so glad we did because it was a bit of a hike, about an hour and a half, to get down there and it would have been weird to just go home after. We grabbed hibachi on the way home and our little daycation was the best. We’ve seriously had the best time living together, and I want to say a thank you to everyone who stopped by on Saturday to see our new place. This weekend has me feeling truly, truly blessed.
