Please note that the following post should not be taken as medical advice. Consult a doctor if you’re looking to start or change up your daily supplement routine. This is just what I’m doing to keep myself as healthy as possible and I wanted to share. Thank you!
It’s been a while since I posted.
Obviously, there’s been a lot going on both personally and globally and I just wasn’t feeling totally inspired. I’ve taken time recently to live and post more intentionally and while I used to feel like a content farm, I think I’m past that point in my life. It’s ok to share only when I have something meaningful to say and I shouldn’t force myself to pump out posts five or six times a week, as I did for years.
We all know that big changes are happening and that it probably will never go completely back to the way everything was (which isn’t a bad thing! just different!). I’d like to think that we’ll come out on the other side of this more aware, more mindful, and more considerate. I am so happy that my circle all seems to be learning and growing and I haven’t had to reevaluate any of my relationships. I’m talking here about both the response to COVID-19 and the massive BLM movement. Selfishness and ignorance have no place in my life and it’s made me so happy to see that the folks I surround myself with are the same.
That being said, things do seem to be creeping back to life. I actually go back to the office in mid-July. My office has about 10 people MAX and pretty much everyone but me has the chance to opt out of returning. This is because of my admin position and the fact I’m helping out my boss by being boots-on-the-ground as she has high-risk family members. I actually don’t mind one bit as I’m itching to get back to some kind of routine. My company is also enforcing strict safety protocols, as is my building.
But I have a responsibility to myself and my family to stay as healthy as I can. So YUP I’m going to wear a mask and have hand sanitizer on me at all times and avoid crowds… all that jazz.
One of the things I do for myself is take a little collection of supplements every day. I’m not going to fool myself into thinking that they’re a replacement for a balanced diet, exercise, or vaccines- but I will tell you that the only times I’ve been sick in the past year since I moved home last summer were asthma or migraine related.
Taking supplements is such a personal thing, but I’ve incorporated a little crew into my morning routine. If you’re wondering where to start, I suggest this easy little quiz on WebMD. Don’t feel like you have to take EVERYTHING they suggest. I limit myself to six to fit in this nifty little holder so I don’t go overboard.
So what is it that I’m taking with my coffee and breakfast every morning?
Vitamin B Complex
The family of B vitamins includes the common supplements vitamin B-12, biotin, & folic acid. B vitamins play a role in energy metabolism by converting foot into energy & supporting a healthy heart & nervous system. This one is actually new for me. I was taking a super green supplement but I eat fairly healthy and I had some weird nerve issues a while back where B12 was suggested. B6 is also supposed to be helpful in dealing with symptoms of PMS.
Turmeric CurcuminÂ
I have arthritis and my joints pop all the time. Early research suggests that curcumin, a chemical found in turmeric, might reduce some RA symptoms, including pain, morning stiffness, walking time, and joint swelling. Other research shows that taking a turmeric product twice daily reduces RA symptoms more than conventional medication.
One A Day Women’s Petites Multivitamin
I keep an extra bottle of this at work in case I don’t have time in the morning to do my full vitamin routine. Pretty self-explanatory, it covers a bunch of bases. It’s formulated to support bone health, immune health, skin health, heart health, and physical energy by helping convert food to fuel.
Potassium
Potassium is one of the most important minerals in the body. It helps regulate fluid balance, muscle contractions and nerve signals. A high-potassium diet may help reduce blood pressure and water retention, protect against stroke and prevent osteoporosis and kidney stones. I’ve taken it for quite some time to prevent leg cramps, but I had to get off birth control last summer because ocular migraines put me at risk for stroke. Additionally, petite women are at a higher risk for osteoporosis. This particular brand keeps selling out, but potassium is a MUST HAVE for me.
Acidophilus Probiotic BlendÂ
Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for you, especially your digestive system. We usually think of these as germs that cause diseases. But your body is full of bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are often called “good” or “helpful” bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy.
St. John’s Wort
This is another new one for me! I’ve been working with a therapist for about a year now who has really helped me understand my anxiety. I’ve been managing it well, and without medication, but occasionally I do have mild panic attacks, trouble sleeping, fatigue, or poor appetite. Some studies have shown that St. John’s Wort may help with these and other symptoms of anxiety. (And PMS. I am so GROUCHY when I’m PMSing and I H A T E it!)
I’d love to know if you take any supplements or vitamins and what your routine is! It’s so important, especially now, to be taking care of ourselves inside and out!
