I’m a sucker for a good theme anything. If I get a chance to dress up- I’ll do it. I want to say this started with dance recital costumes when I was five, but apparently by the time I could walk and talk I already had a favorite “costume”: a onesie, a ski hat, a pacifier, and my grandfather’s dog tags. Why? Who knows? The point is, I’ve been playing dress-up since before I knew I was playing dress-up.
There’s a catch though. My costumes have always been “cute.” I was never a zombie or anything for Halloween. I think the only costume I had that wasn’t pink or sparkly or a tutu of some kind was the year I was Cosette from Les Miserables. I don’t do ugly, even for fun.
So you see my issue when it comes to Ugly Sweater parties- I desperately want to play along but I’m not going to buy something that is actually supposed to be ugly. Now, my mom is a teacher, so she used to have sweaters galore for the holiday season. Unfortunately, she got rid of them before the ugly sweater resurgence or I would wear her Christmas teddy bear sweater with the glass eyes. Instead, I bend the rules a bit. I go with the festive sweater (or sweatshirt) then might go totally overboard with holiday accessories and plaid.
