Most of us have some kind of skincare routine. Whether it’s something simple that takes you a couple of minutes, or you end up having to spend hours in the bathroom with huge amounts of different products, we all know how important it is to take care of our skin as much as possible. However, a lot of people end up making some incredibly simply mistakes that end up undermining all of the hard work and effort that they put into their skincare routine. With that in mind, here are some ways to start taking better care of your skin.

Go makeup free
Makeup is great! It can help people to become more confident, express themselves, and be creative with their appearance. However, there are a lot of people who end up feeling as though they have no choice but to wear makeup at all hours of the day. This usually comes from the fear of being judged for how they’ll look without it. However, wearing makeup every day can actually be rather bad for your skin. By going without makeup for just a couple of days out of the week, you’re going to be able to give your skin a whole lot more room to breathe, and you can prevent your pores from becoming clogged and greasy. I usually spend a day out of the week sans makeup, but even when I do have something on my face I save my Givenchy PhotoPerfexion Fluid Foundation for special occasions and opt for something light like Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer.
Find the right products
There are so many different skincare products out there on the market right now that it can often be pretty overwhelming for a lot of people. However, not all products are going to be right for all people. Someone with dry skin is going to need different products than someone with acne prone skin, and so on. The best thing that you can do is to do as much research as possible. Look up different brands and different products to try and find the one that’s right for you. It’s also a good idea to try a few things out here and there just to see what works.
What’s working for me right now? I’m using Brandless face wash (it’s the one grapefruit face product I’ve used that doesn’t tear up my skin) and their moisturizer. It’s unscented but I add frankincense oil and lemon oil for both the scent and the fact that I will forever swear by frankincense oil for my skin now. It does wonders for cystic acne! Even if I’m feeling lazy, I always make sure to remove my makeup. My favorite wipes are Yes To Tomatoes Clear Skin Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Wipes but I’m currently using Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleansing Cloths and have no complaints. (They’re available for Subscribe and Save so it’s purely out of convenience why I switched.)
Fix your diet
Of course, any issues that you’re having with your skin aren’t just going to come from the outside. They can also come from inside your body as well. The things that you eat and drink will have a pretty significant impact on your skin in ways that you might not really think about. Being dehydrated is going to be seriously bad for your skin as is eating greasy, unhealthy foods. I notice in myself (and have since I was in middle school) that if I drink soda, I break out. I noticed in college that drinking = dull, flakey skin. Eating as many fresh foods as possible is the best thing to do in order to improve your overall health as well as the health of your skin.
It can often seem like taking care of your skin is a lot of effort that can be difficult to wrap your head around. However, it’s important to understand that most of these tips are actually incredibly easy to put into practice. It’s just a matter of taking some time to actually put the effort in. Eventually, these kinds of things will become pure habit and your skin is going to be so much better for it.
