Have you ever woken up one morning and seen an annoying spot on your face? It’s irritating, but there’s no big deal – it’s just a spot, right? It’ll be gone in a day or two, and then you’ll be back to normal. Fast forward to tomorrow, and there are suddenly multiple spots around the first one! How has this happened?! Why has the spot spread and caused more to crop up?
This happens far too often, and the cause of many breakouts usually stems from one of two spots forming and then spreading. So, if you want to stop a breakout in its tracks, focus on preventing the original spots from spreading. Here are some quick tips that’ll do precisely that:

Don’t touch the spot
Avoid touching the spot with your fingers, no matter how desperately you want to poke it! When you do this, you get the bacteria/germs on your fingers, and they will spread it to other parts of your face when you touch it. Instead, if you need to touch the spot to put ointment or cream on it, use a cotton bud.Â
You probably think that cotton buds are meant for your ears, but ironically, that couldn’t be further from the truth. If you keep sticking them in your ears, you’ll soon be booking an audiology appointment to tackle a hearing problem! Cotton buds are actually perfect for applying creams, serums, or ointments to your face. You can dab some on the bud, then carefully apply it to the spot. It means you can treat the spot without touching it with your fingers. This can prevent the spread and leave you with only one spot to worry about.Â
Don’t pop the spot
When you have a pimple/spot, your instinct is to pop it. You can see the little bulge appearing, and you know there’s a lot of gunk inside. Often, you think that popping the spot will help speed things up and get all the bacteria and gunk out of your skin. In reality, it actually causes more breakouts.Â
The gunk can easily get onto nearby areas of your skin, causing more spots to start appearing. Likewise, it could lead to an infection in the original spot, making it bigger and worse. If you want to speed things up without creating the risks, there are things called spot dots that work perfectly. In essence, you apply a special circle to the spot, and leave it in place. The circle is made from a material that sticks to the skin and almost pulls it up. This encourages the gunk to come to the surface, making the spot pop naturally. But, because a protective circle is placed on the spot, it means there’s no splash to worry about and the surrounding area is left untouched!
