If there’s anywhere in the home that deserves the look and feel of real luxury, it’s the bedroom. Not only is it your personal and private space, but it’s a place where relaxation is key. The room is for sleeping, after all, and if you can’t relax, you can’t get to sleep. That’s why we’re going to take a little look at what “luxury” means in the bedroom and how you add a little taste to yours.

Clear it out

First of all, a luxury bedroom is not constantly under assault from dirty clothes, makeup and other miscellaneous items that don’t seem to have a home. You want to banish clutter from the room at all costs not just because it looks unsightly. The truth is that clutter is also bad for your health, having been proven to increase the feeling of stress. For that reason, invest in a few pieces of storage for the room, including hampers and multipurpose furniture that has extra storage pockets on them. Don’t forget to thoroughly clean, either, taking a look at those aforementioned miscellaneous items and deciding whether or not they truly belong in the bedroom after all.

I’m slowly getting rid of extra clutter with ThredUP. If I try on a piece of clothing and I don’t like how it fits, it goes right into my ThredUP Clean Out Bag. No point in holding onto something you don’t love.

Go natural

One aspect of interior design that can really go against the feeling of luxury is the look and feel of too many synthetic materials. Man-made décor might be a lot easier to get your hands on, but there’s no denying that it looks cheaper and simply lacks the quality and attention to detail of hand-crafted natural materials. Furniture sets like the North Shore bedroom collection show off all the appeal of high-quality wooden furniture. Not only does it create a sense of luxury, but wood has a natural, warm color tone that can make the room feel a lot cozier. Try to incorporate a sense of natural design in your storage furniture, your bed, and the little additions like picture frames and shelves.

Show your eye for art

On the subject of picture frames, luxury is about more than just choosing what’s functional. Without the chance to express a little personality or taste, your bedroom can feel little bare. What’s more, it can feel alien, like it’s not your room at all. So, a little wall art can go a long way. Do be careful when choosing art, however. You want to make sure it fits both the vibe of the room and the broader aesthetic style. Matching a painting or photo to color scheme might be simple but setting the right mood can be difficult. Abstract pieces in the bedroom can disrupt the feeling of comfort, for instance. You don’t want to display something challenging in a room that’s supposed to be designed to be as relaxing and challenge-less as possible.

Light with purpose

Lighting plays a huge role in the bedroom. You need to look beyond choosing the right ceiling fixture, too. In the daytime, make sure you have window treatments like high-quality blinds or plantation shutters that allow you to better control how much natural light you allow into the room. In the evening, make sure you layer your lighting. Accent lights can make the room feel a lot warmer and more comfortable. Task lighting, like lights over the desk or on the bedside tables, can help you maintain visibility without having to turn on the big light and shatter the feeling of intimacy and coziness that the room might otherwise enjoy.

Get rid of the carpet

Carpets in the bedroom are fast becoming an old-fashioned hanger-on from styles of the past. Not only do hardwood floors tend to feel much cleaner under bare feet (and you don’t want your bedroom feeling dirty). But rugs tend to feel much more comfortable and luxurious than a standard carpet. It’s also much, much easier to clean a room with a hardwood floor and a few place rugs than to clean an entire carpet. Just make sure you place rugs where they’re at their most effective. At the sides of bed where your feet touch the ground, is a good place to start. But if you have a large, bare space in the middle of the room, adding a rug can contribute a little more depth to the look, too.

Comfort, styles, and coziness matter above all else when creating the perfect bedroom. Even if you’re being frugal with home design throughout the rest of the house, this is the one space you should give your budget a little room to really indulge. After all, a good night’s sleep depends on it.
